  1. Reading countless articles centered on either us against the Big12, or the Big12 against us I started to wonder if this is just a precursor to what we'll be up against in the Big10. Anyone that thinks things will just be all rosy and sweet when we enter next year is naive.

I have a neighbor who played at OSU and is a HUGE Buckeye fan. His family are large OSU boosters and were in town recently from Ohio. After seeing me in a Nebraska shirt they quickly referred to NU as the red-headed orphan child they had to adopt. They were semi-joking...but from what I gathered being around them for a while it's the common sentiment among numerous fans up there. They belittled the NU program constantly while I was around.

From what I've gathered in the last 4-6 months, the Big10 is nothing like the old Big8 we talk about during OU-NU week. There is little to no respect among Big10 teams. Everyone seems to hate everyone when it comes to football. Maybe since OSU is the Texas of the Big10, my exposure to the conference has been skewed. But at this point I don't expect next year to be that great of an experience. A buckeye would just as soon spit in your face after a win as shake your hand. The "good-ol-boy" conference we talk about during weeks like this doesn't exist up north. Throw respect out the door; get ready for plenty of years where we are hated.

My guess is we'll have 11 teams cheering against us each week, so this week is a precursor to next year.

That's just how Buckeyes and scum fans act. ;o) (To be fair, thats only a small minority of the fans)

Seriously though, it's not as bad as you make it sound. I went to Iowa for the MSU v. Iowa game and the people there were really friendly! People were offering us food (that wasnt spit on) and inviting us to pound homemade spiked cider (that they didnt pee in)! While at the game some nice hawkeye shared his flask of whisky with us (which I really needed after watching my team be jail-sexed on the field).

As for rivalries being built on hate, thats what makes them so fun! It doesnt mean you cant live, work, or have a beer with someone from another school. I live with 2 wolverine fans (who talked a lot of crap before we humbled them) and one of my good friends is a badger (I will probably will hit him "playfully" the next time I see him).

There is one caveat, from what I hear PSU fans are full of dbags. Think of Eagle fans, but in a college setting. (I hope your rivarly is better than our "rivarly" with PSU, by our rivarly with PSU I mean a game that neither fan base really cares about and that ugly trophey symbolizes it).

PS I am thinking about going back to school and think it would be cool to be at UNL for its first B10 season. How is the business school regarded in terms of its finance major?

  2. I don't mind the pace of Big Ten basketball. I don't think it is as big of a difference you make it out to be. It's not like Michigan State went to the finals the year before or Evan Turner was league MVP this past year. The Big Ten has made 5 finals appearances since 2000, so even if it is slower or more calculated or whatever, it isn't necessarily inferior.

MSU has done well against Kansas and Texas. More likely than not, we would wipe the floor with the other Big 12 teams.

I think the new stadium and new facilities (if the basketball team wlll be able to use them) will benifit your team. I mean if PSU and um can win a NIT then at least you guys can do the same or at least be able to compete. While football is the main bread winner, it is supporting the other sports. At the very least, the other sports should be able to compete. (this goes for all B10 schools, not just UNL. Also yes B10 baseball sucks, I hope you can light the spark to change that.)

  3. Anyone else have a laugh about the regional split in voting outcome? I mean, it's understandable and expected, but its a near perfect map of the big 10 that has Michigan beating Nebraska.

What's also funny is that 96% of Nebraska thinks the Huskers would have won while only 74% of Michigan think the Wolverines would have won.

That'll tell you something right there.

That 26% of people in Michigan are Michigan State fans?

The Huskers would have destroyed um

  4. SEC academics = pretty much non-existent (with the exception of Vandy, Tenn, & Florida)

Yeah, I guess this is why the University of Georgia is a higher ranked academic undergradaute institution (and also for many graduate programs) than Clemson. Tennessee? Are you kidding me?

Also, you have to look at the feeder schools. States in the deep South perform near or at the bottom on K-12 standardized tests and the school systems themselves are greatly inferior to other states' education systems.

I think we are just limiting the academics to the football recruiting standards.

I have had 4 cousins who went though UGA and I must say that Athens is a beautiful campus. I love how you have rocking chairs in front of your dorms. Having the graduation ceremony in the football stadium in May isnt such a good idea though.

  5. At Ohio State at least, people forget that part of our coaching method - started by Woody Hayes - was not only to make great athletes, but to make great men. Woody really followed after and took care of his student-athletes. The same cannot be said for the convicts of Florida.

While the B10 has has higher academic standards than the $EC, let's not OD on the kool aid. Every program has their mix of good and bad kids.

  6. So Lambeau wants to bid for the championship game too. While I dig the idea of playing in storied venues, the league needs to do what is best for the players and teams. The two teams playing in the game are going to bowl games a few weeks later; let's keep em' healthy and a little practice within the confines of the southernly climates (in other words, keep it indoors at that point) the teams will be playing in leads me to believe no Big Ten championship game cannot be played at Lambeau. Feel free to disagree.

Just my opinion, buyt here are places I see as appropriate...

    1) Chicago. Only issue if Northwestern somehow got in, it would be a home field, but it's Northwestern so eh.

Chicago has a crapload of B10 alumni from all schools.

  7. I remember when Jim Delany called out the $EC back in 2007.

I love speed and the SEC has great speed, especially on the defensive line, but there are appropriate balances when mixing academics and athletics. Each school, as well as each conference, simply must do what fits their mission regardless of what a recruiting service recommends. I wish we had six teams among the top 10 recruiting classes every year, but winning our way requires some discipline and restraint with the recruitment process. Not every athlete fits athletically, academically or socially at every university. Fortunately, we have been able to balance our athletic and academic mission so that we can compete successfully and keep faith with our academic standards.

Here is a link I found with the quote.

  8. Huskers...youll find a LOT of vulgarity from O$U fans...its kinda of a redneck, out of work union workers state where bottles, rocks, fires and drunks are the norm after Buckeye games...If your traveling to Columbus U may want to remove any Big Red stuff from your cars...just a heads up

Doesn't M*ch*gan have the highest unemployment rate in the United States?

Columbus is not a rust belt city; it is very modern, home to many large fashion, communications, and finance companies and has a vibrant cultural scene (especially our German town) and great places to eat. People in Columbus are great. OSU has a reputation for rowdy fans, but obviously, as scUM, you would be on the worst of the receiving end of everything - and I've experienced the same by M*ch*gan fans even as far away in New York. On the whole, OSU fans are very involved with their teams compared with other schools and very passionate about the sport. It is a religion in central Ohio for many people.

The thing that irks me about so many M*ch*gan fans is that most never attended UM, but unlike fans in Ohio, are incredibly arrogant about being more intelligent or more academically inclined because they're UM. It's one of the snobbiest trends in sports. People live vicariously through UM even if they never went there.

    If true, this is ridiculous...

It happens all the time. Standard response is to just ask them what year they graduated from UM, and watch them flounder looking for a comeback. The worst example was the Mexican guy cleaning the floor in my apartment building. Barely spoke English, but was able to call me a stupid Buckeye, and ask me how I liked working at McDonald's.

At Michigan State, such people are known as "Walmart Wolverines." You can't help but laugh about it.

Awwwww. I love when the Sparties try and talk trash. Sooooo cute.

Awwww, a Walverine who thinks they are still relevant
