I never liked pelini's antics but Mike Riley's lack of emotion is really suspect. He must have been neutered by Eichorst before coming to Nebraska. No other explanation for the lack of balls on this coaching staff. I guess getting neutered to get salaries is not bad for these coaches. I feel bad for Gerry. That should have been a top ten play and not an ejection. The referee who called that is an idiot.

Except, you know, that time he drew an unsportsmanlike penalty for yelling at the refs this season.

The sideline audio is actually pretty crazy. They played it on 1060 the week after that game. Riley asked the ref what game he was watching and told him to get thicker glasses. He needs to channel that rage.

It's one of the things I like the least about him. There is a happy medium for emotions. All one or the other is no good. Shelly Smith just interviewed him in the tunnel and it was a great opportunity for him to show a little emotion without irking a ref (assuming that's the rationale for his Mr. Rogers disposition on the field), and it was literally just, "Golly, I thought that was a clean tackle, but that penalty really hurt us and it's just an unfortunate thing."

This guy is full on Ned Flanders. One of these days, he is going to go totally ape sh#t on the sideline from all that pent up rage he's clearly been bottling up for decades.

  3. Hey everyone--can someone give me an abbreviated recap? I've been busy dodging tornadoes down here in Dallas-Ft. Worth this evening, and our TV is still out. :-|

Huskers sticking to power run game with Cross and Ozigbo for the most part. Huskers moving the ball pretty well. Overcame a fumble by Armstrong deep in UCLA territory. UCLA has burned Nebraska on some long pass plays. Game is tied at 21. Gerry was thrown out of the game for a textbook, open-field tackle that the refs called "targeting," and it will likely be the poster-child for an offseason movement to change the rule to at least eliminate the ejection aspect of the penalty, particularly for the first offense in a game.

  4. There will be a time when we look back on college football and won't be able to believe that we actually ejected players for things like this. It will be the like when you learn about the Salem witch trials in school: "Wait, wait, wait. You could make a tackle, and if you hit the guy too hard and your helmets even came close to brushing, they threw you out of the game? No, way. That's crazy!"

These "targeting" penalties are literally ruining the game of football. It MUST be addressed by both the college & pro game, otherwise we might as well strap belts to these players, and let them play flag football.

It has to. It absolutely has to. The ejection aspect is just bonkers. Maybe for repeat penalties but this stuff is way too ticky tack to be taking games away from kids. Gerry is going to miss a collective game of his college career for some very, very questionable/ridiculous calls.

Honestly, anytime there is a "hard hit" in football today, it's a penalty.

I can see the Iowa game hit way more 50/50, but this call is inexcusable. 99 times out of 100 that does not get called

Agreed. I still think the Iowa call was ridiculous (dude was diving, what did you expect to happen?) but this one is insane. Truly insane. Honestly, "targeting" is what Odell Beckham did against that Panther's DB, where you run up to the dude and gratuitously spear him in the head with your helmet. Incidental contact of helmets during a genuine tackle should not be a penalty.

    F'ing Newby.

Play call and pass accuracy doomed that play.
Newby keeps his balance when he turns around and it's a first down.

Sounds like a bunch of boys who never played the game.
pretty ignorant and arrogant statement to make.

Nope, I have and most have not hit more than a keyboard. It is a fact.

You're a clown. If you think Newby is a good football player, then the most you did on any "football" team is get splinters in your ass. Guaranteed.

Do you want to put your money where your mouth is? Have you played past high school? Seriously, put up or shut up.

What does this even mean? You trying to fight? LOL. Does that flower on your shirt squirt water?

You are are too soft to even take on a physical challenge. Your life, your women and your manhood are all illusions formed behind a keyboard. But since this forum is the most you will ever gain toward manhood, publicly wager how much I have accomplished in this game against what you have done.

Okay, at this point, I know you're trolling, in which case, I like your style. But you do have a stutter, John Stossel.
