Sources confirmed that Cosgrove, 48, accepted a lucrative offer from longtime friend and colleague Bill Callahan, who recently was named the Cornhuskers' head coach.

Cosgrove has not returned phone messages all week, but sources indicated he was still in Lincoln, Neb., Wednesday and involved in the interview process of defensive line coach John Blake, one of two assistants hired Wednesday by Nebraska.

Alvarez could not be reached for comment, and a UW spokesman said any hiring announcement would come from Nebraska.

According to UW records, Cosgrove's annual salary is $146,303, the highest among UW's assistants. Sources indicated he could be paid up to $250,000 per year at Nebraska.

OK, this is getting out of hand!! I posted last week before the Callahan hiring thanking you guys for Barry Alvarez, and then it just hit the fan!! Thats just not cool. Its cool that Barry could help him land the job, but then for Bill to just raid our team, not cool.

But I will say that Im glad to see these guys get some recognition, because they are great guys and deserve it. So to give you a little insight, here is my opinion on Kevin Cosgrove:

Great character guy. Very loyal to the program - but has aspirations of being a head coach, so watch out here. We kinda figured our days with KC were numbered. He interviewed for the MU job in '00 but lost it to Pinkel.

Very hard nosed and a players guy.

Big on Turnover margin and defensive scoring, which you guys should favor. He should pick up well where Bo left off.

Big on rushing defense also so that was also something Im sure Bill considered.

Huge fundamentals guy. Will make the players practice tackling until they could do it blinfolded with one arm tied to their leg. You should appreciate this facet. You wont see his guys miss too many tackles. Great mechanics.

Overall you guys sure did land some good ones. Not sure if you got any others from us yet, but i heard some others have been interviewed. You lucky punks!!

Good luck to you.

Callahan is lining up an all-star cast of recruiters, I give him that. He knows his sh#t on offense too as many of said he is the greatest OL coach of all time. The jury is still out on his defensive strategy and we have to give him until next year to prove himself. His leash is going to be substantially shorter with Husker fans if there is much decline in the performance of the defense next year. The Blackshirts returned with a vengeance. The secondary was f*cking exciting to watch this past season, especially against Michigan State and most of them will be back. The major loss is Demorrio Williams which is an issue but the defense better still be headed in the right direction or fans, including myself, will have less patience while he rebuilds the offense. Firing the whole lot of defensive coaches, who did a marvelous job rebuilding with not much new talent to work with, put BC's butt squarely on the hot seat from a defensive standpoint and he better bring the wood to rebuilding that staff. Not doing handsprings down here so far over Cosgrove and Blake other than from the recruiting standpoint. As we have seen at Texass, you can bring all the five star players you can pack in one year and still not do a damn thing with it. NU doesn't want to be in that situation.
