Three keys vs. Idaho

Posted by: Steve Sipple on September 9, 2010 at 4:06PM CST

Nebraska will look to take a step forward Saturday against Idaho, what with a Sept. 18 trip to Washington looming.

Here are three key areas of interest:

1. Get steady pressure on Idaho senior quarterback Nathan Enderle. He's a four-year starter and likely won't be easily rattled. The Vandals replaced four of five starting offensive linemen from last season. But they have extraordinary size up front, averaging 6-foot-4 and 325 pounds per starter. The 6-5, 233-pound Enderle has a quick release, so sacks won't come easily. But it's critical for the Huskers to disrupt his rhythm.

2. Communication. We've been hearing about the Nebraska defense's communication issues in game one all week. In Brian Rosenthal's story today, junior defensive tackle Jared Crick blamed communication problems and mental mistakes for allowing Western Kentucky 179 rushing yards -- 36 more than any NU opponent totaled last season.

"It wasn't really them pounding it down our throats," Crick said. "We just kind of messed up here and there."

3. Continue to build momentum and confidence offensively, mindful of last year's struggles. In other words, no letup. Another 500-yard day should be in the offing for Big Red. Remember, this is an Idaho squad that surrendered 42 points or more in five games last season and finished 107th nationally in total defense.

I agree with all 3, but would actually place more emphasis on #3. This is our offense's last chance to build momentum heading into one of the loudest stadiums in the country for our first away game. That's a huge pressure cooker, so the offense absolutely needs all the momentum and confidence it can muster up.
