Penn State to add D1 hockey

Thanks to an $88 million donation from a hockey fan, Penn State will build an on-campus hockey arena and have Division 1 men's and women's hockey programs.

Penn State will be the sixth Big Ten school to have a hockey program. Since six teams are required by the NCAA to form a conference, it is now likely that hockey will become a Big Ten sport. Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Wisconsin have varsity hockey teams that are members of other conferences. (Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State play in the Central College Hockey Association, and Minnesota and Wisconsin are members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.)
