2 Fateful Decisions

CAN WE ALL SHUT UP ABOUT MARTINEZ. THE DEFENSE GAVE UP SIX HUNDRED YARDS
Thank you for saying it. Most people were on his bandwagon after last weeks game and this week some of those same people are ready to kick him off the team! The defense needs to get a lot better and that's that.

Although there are many, many questions that I would like to ask Bo, there are two decisions I think that may end up deciding Bo's future at NU.

1. Hitching his wagon to T-Mart at QB.

2. Placing Baker Steinkuhler on the D-Line.

1. T-Mart remains an average to above average QB. Unfortunately, he does have some significant liabilities. But, despite them, the problem for Bo was not simply T-Mart's limitations, it was that Bo hitched his wagon to T-Mart for (possibly) 4 seasons. This obviously could have a happy ending, let's hope.

2. I realize the Defense is weak. I realize Baker has been ok on D-Line. I just happen to think that having a 4 year starter at left tackle would have had cascading benefits. An anchor there would have greatly improved the O-line AND helped the defense by KEEPING them off the field. It also would have made the staff recruit replacement d-tackles. I will be interested whether Baker is drafted as a d-lineman or auditioned for the O-line in the NFL.

The season is still young and the B1G is weak.

1. If the offensive line blocks like it is supposed to and plays with some intensity/will to win, T-Magic's "significant liabilities" disappear. He is a very good QB. He did not give up the yards that beat us.

2. Baker S. has been a real "bust" for this team. He is not a prolific player like his hype says he is. Very average at his best. He is not the answer and for those who think this will be his year, stay tuned. You will be greatly disappointed.

STOP BLAMING TAYLOR!

This loss is not on the offense... Yes, they could have scored more but the loss is squarely on the Def and mainl the LB/DL.

Taylor made a few bad mistakes but he also is the reason we didnt get blown out of the water....

Amen.....

If our defense has an average game, we win this game fairly easy.

Our defense (especially the pass coverage) was absolutely awful. I don't know if I have ever seen a game where Nebraska defenders missed more tackles. Many times the players were in position to make the play only to fail to finish it off.
I would say the corners were good and even the safties for most of the game, but the LB's in coverage killed us and on passing situations the D-line killed us as well not only did they not get pressure but when they would get a little the QB would run for ten yards. The D is a BIG problem and has to get fixed or it will be a VERY disappoiting season.

If you're takeaway from the UCLA debacle is that A) Martinez is the problem B) Barney Cotton is the problem or C) our offensive line is the problem, then you don't understand jack sh#t about what our real challenges are. I guess it's an open forum and you can b!^@h about anything you like but, from my point of view, if you're talking about any of these 3 issues at this point in time, you're wasting your time and ours. Clue #1- look at the yards we gave up. Clue #2- look at the lack of speed and the lack of D pressure. Clues #3 & #4- the rare number of blitzs and some of the boneheaded offensive play calls. Our problems were not on the field at the same time our offense was on the field. The problems were when our defense was on the field and with the guys not wearing pads on the sidelines and in the press box (and I don't mean Rex or any unsuited players). The defense, or lack thereof, made a win highly unlikely but play calling on both sides of the ball put it solidly in the L column.

Couldn't have said it better myself. +1

Some are jumping to the conclusion that my OP was regarding the UCLA game. It isn't.

The post is my opinion on 2 major decisions that Bo made that have had a long term and sustained ramifications for this team.

The defense does not operate in a vacuum. One of the prime reasons the Defenses of the 90s are viewed as so good was because the Offense protected the Heck out of them by KEEPING them off the field.

The O-line is and has been maligned since Bo returned. Don't you think that having one solid (and remarkably durable) left tackle would have shored up that line over the past 4 years? And that left tackle would have made T-Mart or whatever QB better (as well as the run game).

OP- I'm just not seeing your two lynch pins as being important contributing factors or proof of any failure on Pelini's behalf. 1- Taylor is our quarterback because he is damn good and the best we have. When he is less than highly productive, you need to look at how they are trying to use him. I sure don't think it has anything to do with Bo "hitching his wagon". I may not agree with quite a few things Bo does but I still believe he is going to put the best player he has available in any position. And the Steinkuhler thing is at best a hypothetical guess. Leave him at left tackle and IMO not one thing is materially different with this team (except possibly we have somebody doing a better job on the D line) and I guess that would help but it is hardly the point you were trying to make.

i felt beck kinda freaked out based on the play calling at the game... it looked very bland and i was suprised as it seems that everyone is saying all the players are totatally more confident in year two of the beck offense and how they kill it in practice everyday... seems like everyone seems to be confident except beck??

he is an out of position Offensive Left Tackle. He was a 5* LT. His dad taught him how to play that position. He was revered as an offensive tackle.

He was unfortunately put in a position to fail.

#1 - He's only running the plays given to him, and what was called for him, was awful

#2 - You could have put Jesus Christ at DL, if nobody else is going to tackle, then whoever is at that DL spot, isn't going to make that much of a difference
