So basically, it was a incorrect officiating call and not interference. Let me explain.OK....this is being debated all day today. Why isn't this interference? The DB hits the WR before the ball gets there. If it weren't intercepted and if the DB hadn't hit him, the ball may have been catchable. Is it because the ball was touched by a different defender before it got to the receiver? So, it's basically like the ball was tipped at the LOS so no PI?
If defensive player looks back toward the ball, he can grab the intended receivers jersey, make contact, and it usually isn't called PI because he is playing the ball too. That is in most cases we see in every game. But, PI can be called if official thinks he is interfering with grabbing and holding.
If defensive player does not look back to the ball and makes contact with the receiver, 99% of the time it is called PI. Including if defensive player puts his hands up and makes contact. PI. Key words - hands up, doesn't look back at the ball, and makes contact.
If defensive player puts his hands in the air against a receiver, doesn't look back, and doesn't make contact - he can do that all game long because he is not "interfering". He is just defending. No PI.
This last scenario is what happened. And the receiver creates very little contact with the defender. It should not have been PI. Instead of a 4th down and long, it was a first and goal - pass interference.
