2024 Fall Camp Notes - Receivers & Tight Ends

I just want to see our team opening up the field this season, getting teams spread out and on their heels.

I want to see an offense that can exploit defensive weaknesses within the framework of the offense. I've always said that i thought one of the hardest, most underrated challenges of playing in the Big 10 is adapting to the diversity of styles and that's more significant now than ever with the additional teams. The 335 on defense gives us that versatility, but I think we're making strides there on offense now, too. There was a much more concerted effort in the spring to get the ball, in space, to all 5 positions, and Raiola, in particular did well there.

With this TV deal, we're going to have weeks where you may have to play a Friday night game. You don't have time to install a bunch of stuff for that specific opponent. Can we make CBs come up and tackle, or LB/S play coverage....all of those things...and do so not because we're trying to run stuff we haven't had time to properly practice but rather just dialing up the elements that already exist.

For me, I think Satterfield gets a pass last year because of circumstances but I don't think anyone is going to give him much rope this year.

I have a hard time believing Nelson will contribute much this year.  He's coming from 8 man football where he could just out-athlete everyone else.  Plus he wasn't here in the spring to get his feet wet.  He's going to have quite an adjustment period this fall.

Yeah, plus he's not a wide receiver by trade.

I doubt he'll be in the regular rotation.  I could see him have a few plays designed to get him the ball.  A WR screen where he can just get it and go.  Use him on a jump ball throw into the end zone.

Nelson is a 7-foot high jumper as well.  Coleman is a 6-5 (or better) jumper as well.
Carter Nelson was a one of the greatest athletes in the history of the State of Nebraska. He is a freak of epic proportions. He ran an 11.0 100m, threw the discus 188’ and the shot 52’ and long jumped 23’ while high jumping 7’. That’s crazy. Not to mention a pole vault of 14’8”.

He is obviously a great football player but he averaged 16/8/5/3 in basketball as well.

Yep.  And when you look at his size, quickness and skill sets, who else is in his way?   Fidone runs with braces on both legs, and Boerkircher is a Boerkircher.

It shouldn't take that long to be in the rotation.  I mean, it's not like we are Alabama or Texas or Ohio State for goodness sake.  Best man up.

Seems not so long ago where it was impossible to get anyone over 6’0” on this roster during the Frost era.

Eh ... I don't know any high jumpers right off hand.  But it's pretty nit-picky to only look at high jumpers.  Frost recruited quite a few elite athletes as well.

Some of these incoming kids bring Matt Herian to my mind.  I wonder what he could have been without that injury.

This could probably be interpreted more than one way, but it feels like they converted a position in their offense (a slot) to accommodate Nelson and that could also be the position Bonner is playing.  Time will tell

That's the comparison I've made before, and I agree that the types of things we saw Bonner do in the spring would be also the kinds of things Nelson would potentially do.

I hesitate to call it a 'position' though. With Bonner, he can already to a bunch of stuff, but in Nelson's case it'll depend on how fast his skills and knowledge develop. That's what's great about the receiver position, it kinda grows with you. If you can only do 'this' then that's all you go in for.

If we talk about that play we've talked about all spring/summer with Bonner in a big slot role and two receivers to the outside, a guy like Nelson can impact games there just with his athleticism. Maybe he just runs seam routes and can get open that way if they try to bracket the outside or he occupies a Safety so one of the outside speedsters gets one on one. I think we'll have a package for him whether that's him catching screens or running 4 verts or whatever and then we'll see how he develops and how injuries play out.
