2024 Fall Camp Notes - Receivers & Tight Ends

If you want two breakout guys on offense (each in their own way), Barney and Fidone are great candidates. Barney obviously has a tougher path to consistent playing time, but he's the kind of guy that'll be hard to get off the field once he breaks through.

Fidone has a real chance for national considerations. He can play all of the tight end spots, we have some creative ways to get it to him, and Raiola throws an accurate, catchable ball that can lead to yards after catch.

Such an underrated aspect of QB play.

I think it's something we've really missed with previous quarterbacks. I look back at clips of Spielman, Wandale and some of our other great receivers and they put them in some dangerous spots when throwing the ball.

It was reiterated today when I was watching that new WR docuseries specifically with Jimmy G and Davante Adams. At one point, Davante said something like, "I've never been hit this much in my career."

That's not surprising. Rodgers is infamous for not throwing the ball over the middle. Especially with Adams, the Packers offense was all about outside screens and RPOs and taking shots on the outside. On a screen or 1 on 1 on the outside, there aren't that many free hitters to target Adams.

The Raiders, however, throw him over the middle a lot and let's just say ole Jimmy ain't Aaron when it comes to accuracy. A little late, a little high, these things just beg for your WR to take a shot.

I don't think we have had a guy that even remotely compares. When we're talking accuracy and catchability, maybe the best example is to Fidone on that first catch of his this spring on that TE screen. There was defender in pursuit with a good angle and if that ball causes him to readjust and slow down he doesn't turn that corner and gain about 15 yards.

The Jimmy G example is pretty appropriate though. I think he gets paid every time he overthrows Adams on a deep ball, he does it so much. Whereas look at the pass this spring from Raiola to Lloyd. He throws a nice, high deep ball that allows his receivers to track and adjust on it and they're able to pull away when they catch it.

What we did to Spielman was criminal.  That poor kid was like a Scott Sterling or Super Dave comedy routine....but it was really happening.

I know he left, but I always felt bad for him.

Let's hope Fidone has a great year to earn this award.  Time for a breakout year.

Nebraska’s Thomas Fidone II was recognized Friday, as he was on the initial John Mackey Award Watch List. The Mackey Award is presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding collegiate tight end.

Fidone, a 6-foot-6, 255-pounder from Council Bluffs, Iowa, comes into the 2024 season as one of Nebraska’s top offensive threats and poised for a breakout junior season. After being limited by injuries in his first two seasons, Fidone tallied 25 catches for 260 yards and four touchdowns in 2023, as his 25 catches ranked second on the team.  Fidone led the Husker receiving corps with four TDs and had three-or-more catches five times – with four of those coming in Big Ten play. His four touchdown grabs were the most by a Husker tight end since 2010.

Do you waste a year of eligibility on him when N has so many receivers, unless a few get injured during the season? If Jaylyn Gramstad becomes the number two QB, I can see HH playing the role that the coaches have planned for Nelson.

You put your best players on the field. If he can get up to speed on the playbook he'll play every game. The only way I can see this not happening is if he is truly struggling picking things up or he gets injured.

I know he’s down on the WR depth chart, but being the athlete he is you’d think he could help on special teams.

And if the thought is saving him for after Banks/Neyor graduate, I’m guessing we’ll be able to bring in high quality portal WRs due to having #15.

I think Rhule wants to develop players and only bring in transfers as necessary to fill in.
