2025-2026 Portal Updates

I’m having some fun following all of this portal news but it’s depressing too. If 247 is right, Indiana just got 3 of the top 18 Edge players. I’m not anti-Indiana and wouldn’t mind seeing them win it all but this is unsustainable for us. I don’t think these guys are taking discounts to go there either. Does Mark Cuban money just dwarf what we have to offer? If this doesn’t get fixed soon we’re doomed. Do we have any significant money to compete in the meantime? It used to be oh we’re in a small market and it’s hard to get players to come here and I never believed that. It used to be Tuscaloosa, AL and now it’s Bloomington, IN and Lubbock, TX. These are not desirable places for college kids. But money gets them there. Do we have any money? Does anyone publish team total payrolls? If teams are going to significantly outspend us it’s like the Dodgers and Yankees rosters playing some AAA farm team.
I don't know the answer to your question. But we definitely cannot afford ridiculous buyouts driven by coaching contracts in this current environment.
It creates a paradox. Firing coaches taps into funds better spent on players. Not firing an underperforming coach creates a different set of problems. The previous statement is not an attempt to get a (Rhule conversation) started. Just commentary on the problem facing us.

I don't feel very confident about recruiting of the DL in the portal. And we lose Davis. There is still time but the pickings are going to get slim. Feels like this could be another Gabe Moore/Jaylen George year (barf). This is without a doubt the more important position group in the offseason.

We better pray we get Lockett/Crowder.
Agree...appears we are getting killed by not having enough NIL funds to go around.

I don't think the problem is the funds, playing for an elite program also has value. I would guess we were prepared to offer some of the Indiana commits more money, but the guys Indiana wants are not leaving Bloomington without committing. They are getting enough money and being able to play for what would seem to be the best coaching staff in the game right now to not bother listening to higher dollar offers at worse programs.

it's always about the money, but if 2 schools are offering the same money then it becomes about what program is better and playing time.

We offered Isaiah World more money than Oregon IIRC. Once the money hits a certain level, guys are willing to take slightly less money to play somewhere with other things they value (proof of NFL-level development, playoff appearances, etc).

Exactly. Do you want to get paid to play college football at a place that regularly puts guys at your position in the nfl or do you want to get paid to play at nebraska? It's a pretty easy decision for big time recruits or portal guys until Rhule make more progress on the field.
