Big Play Offense

We didn't start off really great in this.  But we've made up ground in a hurry.

Ranks in plays of XX yards or more:

10 yards - #22

20 yards - #14

Not as good after that but we've been gaining in the last couple games.

Off the top of my head, NU had 4 or 5 plays over 40 yards against Minnesota.  Ozigbo's two long TD runs, Martinez had a couple long runs, and the late TD pass to Morgan.  I love ripping off the big chunk plays.  Chunk and Sloth agree, too!!!

We have played 1 less patty cake than probably every other P5 team. Including the SEC even though they play one later since they have 4 OOC games. I imagine we move up a lot after Saturday.

Just eyeballing it I believe we’re tied for 9th or 10th in 10+ yard plays from scrimmage per game.

Memphis is #4 in total and has 144 in 8 games.

If our average stays the same we will have 144 in 8 games after Saturday.  There are 7 teams ahead of us who also have 7 games so they stay ahead of us.

Remember when people complained that we had too many big plays with Other Martinez and no consistency?

I would love to have that again just by itself, but with New Martinez maybe we can have both. I think he’s better and I think our OC is a lot better.

Will be interesting to see if we crack the top 5 after this week.

I think people overreacted regarding the big play offense under Taylor Martinez.  Yes, it would have been great for that offense to be more consistent, but it drives me nuts when fans say they prefer offenses which churn out a few yards at a time and take their time to score.  It's proven that offenses score more points by creating big plays.

Yes I agree. Being able to do a couple 30+ yard TD runs every game would go a long way towards getting more victories.

That was the problem with Riley/Lansdorf's offense.  It didn't create enough big plays, especially in the running game.  That forced the offense to go numerous plays to score, which led to a greater chance of having the drive stall out via penalty, sack, or turnover.

The perfect example of how a quick strike/big play offense is so great is from the Minnesota game after they cut NU"s lead to 28-22.  NU responded by going 74 yards in 4 plays to score a TD.  NU didn't even have a 2nd down in that drive to get worried about being stopped by Minny.
