Red Report: Backup QB Carnes benefits from 'football school'

Brion Carnes is determined to feel more comfortable running Nebraska's offense.

Hence his eager participation in "football school" — the Huskers' term for the offseason tests and quizzes the players took in the weeks leading to spring drills, which began Saturday.

"I worked really hard in the offseason to read coverages and read blitzes and just learn what everybody does," said Carnes, the No. 2 quarterback behind junior Taylor Martinez.

As a redshirt freshman last season, Carnes appeared in only three games and attempted two passes, completing both.

"It was kind of difficult being that it was a new system," said Carnes, referring to then-first-year offensive coordinator Tim Beck's offense. "(Beck) didn't really have time to teach us all the offense, so he had to go with the experienced player. So this offseason he put us in 'football school,' and it really paid off. I'm out here competing every day."

"He can control his (lead) shoulder more," Turner said. "There would be some times when he'd drop back and his footwork would be so bad that when he goes to throw his shoulder opens up so much that he'll make bad passes. And now he's more tight in his throws and he looks a lot better."

Turner needs to just keep quiet I think.

Why are we still not deep at OLine? two more walk-ons getting good looks because of injury. That is not to say they can't be good or great, but good lord I'm getting sick of hearing our OLine is always injured.

I respectfully disagree. Nothing wrong with what he said. In my opinion of course.

This is an ongoing mystery. We need to shore this up, big-time.

It's tough to find another player on the team getting quoted saying anything negative in regards to a teammate. Turner has been quoted multiple times being critical of Martinez. Thats our job, not his. Until he's out there under center for a while his opinion doesn't carry much weight w/ me. Statements like this do no one any good.

In my opinion that played a part in Jamal's disappearance.

Taylor has been quoted being critical of his teammates, too, so I'd say it's all fair. I thought it was insightful from Turner and he's commenting on how Taylor has improved now. I'm sure Bo won't like it but I am not particularly upset with Jamal personally.

I didn't think that was a "criticism" of Martinez, more of a critique of his throwing style, and support for his improvement. That sounds way more supportive than critical. :dunno

exactly, I took it as being positive toward a teammate in saying that Taylor has improved compared to last year. I guess if some people want to be "glass half empty" that is their prerogative

"his footwork would be so bad that when he goes to throw his shoulder opens up so much that he'll make bad passes" - I guess I just kind of read that as: "he really sucked at times last year but he's getting better". If he wanted to say he was getting better what's the point of including commentary on how bad he was last year? Just say he's greatly improved, mechanics are better, passing is better, etc...

ps: not a big deal to me, just offseason banter. I just don't want to see Turner in the doghouse...

IMO, as long as the comments don't go too overboard, the leaders are the ones that are critical of their teammates because they demand the best from them. I think that's what we see from Jamal Turner:

A future leader.

true, but a leader can communicate their message in a way that doesn't belittle or risk impacting confidence in someone that likely lacks a little of it in the first place. He could have just as easily said: "at times last year Taylor's footwork caused his shoulder to open up which impacted his accuracy"

You can choose to take it however you want, but the main point behind that quote was JT commenting on how much Taylor's footwork has improved, and I don't think that's anything to whine about.

I just worry that if the quote below caused him issues last year (like some thought), then this one likely will as well. I don't really care what his point was - the fact is there were negative comments about Martinez included - and that's something that has caused Jamal problems in the past. I want the kid on the field.

It's just that sometimes Taylor throws a high ball, then he'll come back and throw a liner -- you know, a different kind of ball.
