Cincinnati: What Did We Learn?

Nebraska played a helluva lot better with tempo but need to be able to do the same as the game slows. Also..the backup RBs were about as mediocre as I thought they would be. It was a mistake to not get a transfer in the off-season.

And I never want to see Turner play LT again. Just rock with Gottula.

Some of the write-ups were saying Cincy played a lot of deep cover three, taking away the deep shots and keeping everything in front of them.

And that’s why I said, or keep hitting the quick slants they were giving us. Obviously they were playing deep, so exploit that, maybe draw them in, then take the top off. IDK, game plan seemed conservative…too conservative.

We got the W which should always be Rhule’s goal but when you’ve got NU at -6.5 and -9.5 and over 44.5, it was very frustrating. Didn’t see much of taking what’s available.

I'm kinda surprised given Holgorsen's Air Raid roots and how often we ran it last year (more under Satterfield) we didn't run more 4 verts.

Also, this is not totally fair to Jeudy because he was clearly trying to run a stunt and was off balance - but this is when I knew the run defense was in fact a problem. He ended up quite literally 12 yards down the field.

1). Offense was good enough. I thought Dylan played well, made some nice tight throws. I still think he needs lots of improvement when the other team brings pressure.
2) Johnson has some nice ability to cut and it’s refreshing to have a RB that sees back cuts/jump cuts vs Dowdell who just ran into the back of whoever was in front of him. Need a second RB though to spell Johnson
3) the offense needs to figure out a way to stop having negative plays of 4 yards or more. They are drive killers especially when they are trying to salt the game away. Just can’t have a play like the Barney one on the last drive. I’m not saying it’s a bad call, just saying they have to execute better. Then you can’t have another negative plays/sack after the first one. Thats the kind of stuff that happened last year too many times also. On 2nd and 13 or so, figure out a play and execute so you have a 3rd and 7. You don’t have to get all 13 back with slower developing plays and Dylan take a sack.
4) Oline showed glimpses, but also some really bad plays. Clean those up and we may have something there.
5) unimpressed with Dline play. They continued to get out of rush lanes on a QB that can run.
6) punter and placekicker did great. I loved how Archie was able to place the ball with such accuracy on the sideline at the 8 yr line twice! Far too often our punters would try and land it on the 3 and it would bounce in or kick it too short and it’s fair caught at the 18 when punting from midfield. He is a weapon. And it’s nice to know the PK has some range if needed.
7). Really likes the additions of Key and Hunter! They both looked like upper class college receivers who made the plays they asked to make. It wasn’t a game where receivers were making a highlight catch then dropping two or three third down balls to kill a drive.
8). I would have punted on the first drive after halftime but it wasn’t a terrible decision. I more so didn’t like the third down call.
9) nice to beat a P4 team on game one for a change. These are teams we have consistently lost to the past 7-8 years

Jeudy graded terribly per PFF: 30.6 against the run, 35.5 overall. That's "never see the field" level stuff.

Interesting that Pietrzak only got one snap on defense (not sure if he played on special teams). Seemed to be getting some mentions so either he still has some work to do or that's a bad waste of one of his four games.

Javin Wright graded pretty mediocre overall, across all categories, while playing by far the most snaps.
Shavers graded out REALLY well.
McGahee also graded out at a "never see the field" level. Saw some comments going in about a lot of misses assignments/guessing. Unfortunate as he looked really good down the stretch last year.

Never felt like we lost after a win, before This is not the way I hoped the game, would go.
Don't know what to expect, from here out, but I think the Mich game will tell the story of where this team is going, this season.

GBR !!!

Turner just needs to leave already.

And Rhule needs to sort of push guys out to make room for transfers if needed.

This team still has a lot of work to do to earn the trust of pollsters and oddsmakers. The big advantage in stats that doesn't show up on the scoreboard makes me think a lot of it is still mental. They still need a closer's mentality.

I know fans will complain about the playcalling every single game, but Holgorson called pretty much the game we've been asking for, with a 100 yard rusher who looked solid for all four quarters and a high efficiency Raiola spreading it around to multiple weapons. I was rooting for a jet sweep myself, but it didn't work that time. Stuff happens.

Offensive line looked much improved. Raiola had hours in the pocket and third and short conversions worked well. Immediate improvement in special teams. Return numbers don't look great mostly because Barney fielded punts that were traditionally fair catches.

Here's a question: I was going a little crazy when the DL wasn't getting ANY penetration on those last Cincy drives. They'd certainly been getting into the backfield earlier in the game. But I'm wondering if they were instructed to hold the line and not risk over-pursuing which leaves the big holes that Sorsby was running through. Given that broken plays were Cincy's best weapon, it might have been a legit strategy.
