Cincinnati: What Did We Learn?

Dana is old school. He is not going to show much the 1st 3 games. Osborne used to get the same complaints. Cincinnati was not going to allow us to throw deep. I watched the game again. Right side of oline was much better than the left. I like Haarberg, but he needs to learn how to block!

I mean, that is two different plays.

For jet sweeps and motions what is mostly done is the end or OLB runs right up field to the outside shoulder of the motion man. But generally as far as your eyes go you don't pick up anyone from the opposite of the football until they cross center. Anything before that doesn't really impact you.

With that said, with Bo it wasn't an "eye" issue, it was a two safety issue. He did not want to bring down a safety to play the motion man for some reason, probably because he was worried about getting beat deep or maybe just to give Husker fans something to complain about 10 years later.

I know Bo is your boyfriend and you loved his dirty talk, but don't forget that he quickly went from having the #1 rated defense in 2009 to the #60 rated defense in 2014, and was eventually chased out of Baton Rouge for leading LSU to the worst defensive performance in school history.

There is no way the problem in the Wisconsin game wasn’t an eye issue. The DE wouldn’t even be blocked and the ball carrier would run right by him without him even knowing.

I guess if they played it like an RPO you could play it "that way", but even then your move would be to get up field a step or two so that everything would have to bubble out.

Just seems like a FS or OLB job, not a DE job.

If the DE is lined up just outside of the tackle that gives almost zero chance for him to make that play. If he is lined up on the outside shoulder of the TE and that TE releases inside to block a LBer that DE would step inside to fill that voided gap.

You could have the DE play the motion man but that is just asking a lot, it just doesn't seem sound. But maybe that is what they were doing and maybe that is why they sucked.

Game Management: I might be overly critical here but I cringed when Rhule called that time-out on the 4th and 7 during Cincy's last drive. Cincy's offense is reeling a bit, our defense is feeling it, the crowd is amped (camera shaking moment for those that remember our lesser technology from the day), and ......... time-out, Nebraska. Momentum killer.
For someone that, in my opinion, is fantastic at "reading the room" off the field, he really seems to struggle with "reading the moment" on the field. (Of course Cincy winds up getting the first down. Seems to happen every time.)

Yeah, I suppose it's not the worst thing to make sure your defense is all on the same page in a situation like that.

But I still don't think giving the offense the chance to regroup and not only call one play but maybe get a plan together for the next 2-3 plays was not the best choice. Especially when they were facing fourth down - which they converted after the timeout. And (maybe) figured out to attack Hartzog the rest of the way.

I mean, having the #1 defense in the nation ever is an amazing accomplishment.

But how could I forget, it is all you talk about.

I would never call a TO in that spot. Put pressure on them by making them snap the ball.

Cincy has one guy that would play for Michigan right now. That giant DLineman. That's it.
It is lazy comments like this that drive me nuts. Cinci has 3 players that would easily play for Michigan... or anyone else for that matter.
No. 14 Dontay Corleone
No. 29 Jeff Caldwell
No. 48 Jake Golday

You can look on the list for all the Nebraska Players... spoiler alert we don't have a single one.

Cincinnati didn't have a great year last year but it wasn't like they were bad either. They had horrible luck with injuries, including Corleone, and lost some tight games they likely would have won if he was healthy.

Of course we have issues to work on but celebrate the win for what it is. We beat a power 5 opponent away from our stadium on opening day- something we haven't done in over 20 years.

Your first sentence is the conundrum - Momentum v. Assurance

Agree with your second comment and that is the second part of the equation. Not only in that situation was momentum killed, but it also allowed Cincy a chance to regroup and strategize when they were 'on the ropes'.
