Cincinnati: What Did We Learn?

Who said anything about starting? You don't think those guys crack the 3 deep rotation to see the field on Michigan's team?

I do appreciate your insight on the list.
Why would we care about the three deep? My point stands Cincinnati players are nowhere to Michigan’s. You can LOL to this fact all you like. A few weeks from today could get ugly if there is not significant improvement soon.

I wish Rhule would expand the single digits to singles+teens. That way we could distract ourselves from the fact the RB room is even more than last year and we have the worst defensive line since_________

and Dylan is fine- just needs some nookie, the Aussie is better than I expected, and we’re 1-0 in August.

Dylan's average up to now. EJ is going to get run into the ground. Defense played better then i had thought they would for the most part.
#96 looked like a JV player in his jersey :)

i didn't see anything that made me think we took the next leap as a program. obviously looked better than previous regimes but that isn't saying much. dylan threw some really nice passes, but i feel like the offense as a whole just looked ok. the defense got abused when Cincinnati started running right up the middle. luckily they didn't do that more in the first half. The DBs made a couple nice plays that helped win us the game.

Yeah, I suppose it's not the worst thing to make sure your defense is all on the same page in a situation like that.

But I still don't think giving the offense the chance to regroup and not only call one play but maybe get a plan together for the next 2-3 plays was not the best choice. Especially when they were facing fourth down - which they converted after the timeout. And (maybe) figured out to attack Hartzog the rest of the way.
Question on hartzog: what is it about him that makes the coaches keep playing him even when opponents are clearly keying on him and keeping drives alive solely by targeting him? Occasionally he gets you the big play, but is it worth it if he’s costing you 10 other times?

He does come up clutch occasionally, and has done it a few times. I wish he could fix his crap while playing and be clutch all the time rather than a detriment most of the time but there's always that 1 play he shines.

Overall I wasn't blown away by our performance. A handful of clutch plays and didn't fold when the moment came, that's not nothing. I would put our win total at a max of 8 based off that game if I had to bet the farm on it. But we don't know how good Cincy actually is because I came away more impressed by them than I expected to be.

Offensive line looked much improved.

They looked pretty good pass blocking. Run blocking, not so much.

- Dylan still looks lazy and casual when dropping back. There's almost a lack of purpose and crispness. Hard to describe.

I've noticed that on some short passes, especially ones going just over the line, he looks like a limp noodle. I mean I get that you don't always want a bullet for those throws, but he looks like he's throwing it with less force than I throw the dice in a Monopoly game.

Also anybody detracting from Cincy as a “bad team” is silly.

Did anyone see anything that would suggest that Cincy is a good team?

For god's sake, QB scrambles were practically the entirety of their offense...

Remember last year how the Colorado win was a “good” win because of all the hype?

Any game where we take a dump on the Buffs is a good win.

If don’t we jump off-sides at the goal line, or miss a wide open receiver on a momentum changing 4th down, or any number of other things we easily win this game.

People don’t apply these ‘mistakes’ both ways.

This was a team that's mediocre at best. If we have to play the game where we talk about 'what if this play went the other way', we're no better than mediocre either.

Given the three units of football, only special teams is better as a whole. And that was the difference in the game. Talk about two evenly matched teams.

We opened on the road and beat a power 5 opponent. You can say it was a home game but they still had to travel and over the last decade anytime that has happened the record isn't that great. D-line was the biggest disappointment. Looked un athletic as hell. 2nd play of the first possession Jeudy got manhandled like he just played his first snap of football. O-line was ok. Still pissed about the false start on the goal line. EJ looked solid. Across the board the WR played well. Even made some guys miss after catching the ball. Hunter caught a contested TD and didnt have the ball ripped out of his hands so that's promising. Score was disappointing but we won and I dont think we will face a team with a running QB like that for a while
It felt like a home game to me. Our fans were overwhelming. Caused several false starts. I am happy we won and I would take ten more wins like this but to me, I didn’t see the improvements we were hoping to see on offense. Raiola was ok at best. OL gave him an eternity to throw but he was a little sluggish. Hopefully that was just first game of the season jitters.
