Cincinnati: What Did We Learn?

Nebraska's average recruiting ranking over the last three years is #22. Cincinnati's average over the same period is #63. If we're evenly matched with them, that is a major problem.

Can we PLEASE stop trying to pretend that Cincinnati is a good team?!
Thank you!
Are bleeding heart husker fans are getting to the point in the program where they are trying to make Cincy out to be some good team.

It always starts with "It is just so early, we just don't know what kind of team Cincy will be"
- Did it with Colorado in Primes first year. They sucked

And then switches over to "Well, they are a P4 Team!"
- Yeah, sort of.

Reading the Cincinnati papers I see that they have their excuses and reading our papers I see that we have ours. Their spiels are around their coach, and yeah they seem to be bragging about their recruiting. Like us. This bleeding heart Husker fan is saying we were very lucky to beat them, and that fact makes them a good team as compared to us, hard as that is to swallow.

I could see that being the case. NU is just not that good.

We won. We got some breaks for sure. Hartzog doesn't make the INT, we are probably in OT and losing.
I didn't see anything in game one that really made me say we have turned the corner. ST's was better in the punting and the FG arena. Still no return game. That's gotta change.

Cincy gave a quick take way to beat NU, run it down our throats. At least that's on film. Don't think we have the horses to run a 3-3-5 like White and Knighton were. Maybe we can get to that, but we will take some serious licks. We scored 20 points.....We are not going to be able to go point for point with a lot of teams on our schedule with that.

EJ can't continue to get 30+ touches per game. Who will spell him? Barney took some hits, Bonner out. Like folks mentioned last year, Dylan still appears to throw "lazy". Also talking heads say he does better against zone D and that's what Cincy was running. Purely 100% opinion, is I wish he played with more visible fire and passion. Show more emotion. Hoping we have a deep threat ability this year. A receiver who can take the top off and more importantly can Dylan deliver.

We won. That's huge. Avoided OT. Even bigger. 2-0 in our last 1 score games. Rhule now .500 First opening P4 win on the road since forever.

Maybe losing White, Knighton and Cooper as well as other D transfers hurt more than we'd like to admit. I think we all knew Ty and Nash would hurt.

I said going in that I wasn't expecting a leap this year, just incremental improvement. But what I saw in game one was a team that overall hadn't improved at all. Improved in certain areas, maybe, but regressed in just as many.

I expected 24-24 going into overtime. So it wasn't quite as close as I expected.

Speaking to our good fortune in that game.. AI reminds us: "The Nebraska Cornhuskers have an 8-9 all-time record in overtime games, including an ongoing streak of eight consecutive losses dating back to 2014. Their most recent overtime result was a 31-24 loss to Illinois on September 20, 2024, which also marked their eighth straight overtime defeat."

I mean, having the #1 defense in the nation ever is an amazing accomplishment.

But how could I forget, it is all you talk about.

I mean, I wasn't the one who brought Bo Pelini into a 2025 conversation, claiming these defensive breakdowns wouldn't have happened on his watch. Then calling out Bo's critics a couple posts later, relevant to nothing in the discussion.

That was you.

Which positions did you see regression in. I think D tackle is unquestioned, but what others were you thinking?

Just one person’s opinion here from afar, but I think Dylan is still learning how to throw into tight coverage (man to man where the receiver only has 1/2 a step or a step) or feeling comfortable in knowing that is an open receiver with man to man coverage.

As a QB, you just have to experience making those throws to know you can do it and sometimes it takes a bit to make yourself do it. Maybe he didn’t have confidence in his receivers last year, but with this group hopefully he makes that leap.

The good thing, is making reads and understand the zone coverage is more advanced than understanding which receiver has an advantage pre snap with man coverage.

I’m happy with Dylan’s game yesterday, just hope he shows escapability from the pocket as the year goes on and trusts his receivers to throw into tight coverage when needed

Eh, everyone's take is pretty legitimate.

I found myself smiling yesterday, even though Admo's lady refused to make me a turkey pot pie. What can I say? A win still feels good.

There wasn't much evidence that this team has taken a step forward, so I'd keep every season prediction on hold till further notice.

Last I checked there were still several games left in the season, offering the possibility of adjustments and improvements.

Cincinnati is probably a better team than the lower tier conference foes that some contending teams will struggle with in opening games. Scott Frost's UCF had its hands full with Jacksonville State. A ranked Boise State team just got totally bushwacked.

Still, it would be nice to have a resounding win and a relaxing fourth quarter more often this season. Hope that's not too much to ask.

And then you came in to talk about Bo, after me, so ever farther away from when Bo was coach here, you still brought him up.

Yeah, I suppose it's not the worst thing to make sure your defense is all on the same page in a situation like that.

But I still don't think giving the offense the chance to regroup and not only call one play but maybe get a plan together for the next 2-3 plays was not the best choice. Especially when they were facing fourth down - which they converted after the timeout. And (maybe) figured out to attack Hartzog the rest of the way.

Hard to say on this one. In these situations the announcers usually credit the coach for seeing something he didn't like at the last second -- an alignment or personnel that was about to be exploited. Given all the "break, don't bend" backpedaling on the last couple drives that could have been the case. Was Rhule questioned about the time out post-game? Did he ever say the lack of pass rush was intentional, choosing to hold the line against the QB draws and scrambles that were killing them?
