Cincinnati: What Did We Learn?

Speaking to our good fortune in that game.. AI reminds us: "The Nebraska Cornhuskers have an 8-9 all-time record in overtime games, including an ongoing streak of eight consecutive losses dating back to 2014. Their most recent overtime result was a 31-24 loss to Illinois on September 20, 2024, which also marked their eighth straight overtime defeat."
And IIRC, no points or 1st downs in those losses either....Almost, and I mean with the smallest of "almost" want an OT where we win and can get that King Kong sized monkey off our back....

That's funny because I had Nebraska winning 31-24 in OT.

Offense:

The rotating LT is not a great choice and they should decide on someone and go with it- The 80 yard drive that ended in a FG was all Pritchett and he played, to my observation, pretty well. Then he has false start and the result is a FG. I thought Gottula played as well or better- I am not sure what they see in Turner Corcoran- I think he is washed @ this point. They could parenthetically do this through Akron and Houston Christian but by Michigan it would be nice to see them plant a flag in one of these guys and go with it.

Raiola played well for the most part- I still worry about his unwillingness to drive the ball downfield. That being said I just watched a video that Cincinnati pretty much played deep safeties / shell the entire game to keep them from being able to throw downfield. Holgy has to get this figured out.

Emmitt Johnson is going to be worn to a nub if they have to continue using him like this- the other running backs I saw did nothing. Mozee had a run where there were yards available if he could have accelerated toward the sideline and then cut up- instead he slowed down and was tackled for no grain. I didn't see enough of Mekhi Nelson to comment

Defense- it has been pointed out by others- there is no one on the defensive line that is a run stuffer. That was frustrating to watch. Once Keona Davis left the game with a calf or ankle, one of the 2 transfer D-lineman played a lot and didn't play very well. I can't find a participation chart to see which of them it was.

The linebackers weren't really visible much- MWT played but was taken off the field a bunch. McCullough and Nwanieri were ok- that QB was harder to sack than I anticipated.

Special teams- Punting and kicking were really solid. The returns were not- they have some work to do on that unit.

I am appreciative of the win to open the season- that was huge especially when you factor in this was the OOC tough opponent for the year. They have some work to do through the next 2 games because if the defense plays like this in B1G play- they are going to have a 2:1 TOP against NU and they will lose more than they will win.

GO BIG RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Nebraska has actually managed to lose yards in overtime more than once.

Our plays in those games, much like our 1 score loss record, is statistically impossible to do. Yet me managed to do it. You read that OT stats and I am shocked we even made it to OT. Just mind boggling. Prior to 2015 we were 8-1......Last OT win was Bo vs Iowa 2024. Damn.

Over these 8 games, the Huskers have been outscored 39-0 in overtime periods. They have also failed to score a single point and have not gained a first down in overtime during this streak. In these 8 overtime losses, Nebraska has managed a total of minus-11 yards of total offense on 27 plays.

We have scored 0 to 39
1st downs 0 vs 6
Total yards -11 total vs 97
Rush 7/-12 vs 21-94 yards
Passing 5-12-3 int vs 1-3-0
Avg rush -1.7 vs 4.5
Yards/play .8 vs 4.0

What does Holgó need to figure out? If they play two deep safeties, he did the right thing.

Question, is Rhules obsession with podcasts and social media a bigger distraction than Frost playing golf?

Should be a question asked at the next presser.
Good lord, I don’t disagree. The man LOVES attention and being an influencer. It

It was refreshing in the beginning, but’s getting irritating.
