Cincinnati: What Did We Learn?

Poster may have been thinking NU would need to get a better run game figured out with the look Cindy was giving them. Other than that, not sure what he could be referencing, though there are still ways to scheme a deep throw or two during the game even with that type of look.
Would successfully dinking and dunking wide open 5-10 yards a pop every time with your quarterback completing 80% of his passes en route to a win count as figuring out what to do?
Ran some numbers comparing DR 2024 to Will Howard 2024 NC QB. DR averaged 6.8/ yards completion and Will hit at 8.8 yards /comp. DR longest completion average all season was 36.6 compared to Will at 35. DR's longest completion per game ranged from 24 to 59. Will was 25 to 70. DR averaged 5.8 against Cincy with long of 24 yards.

After looking at those stats, it's not really going deep, but getting more yards per completion that will help us out. Not saying abandon the deep ball (make DC's worry about it), but just try to get more per completion. Unsure how many of DR's were to his check down, but until the guys get comfortable with the live action there will be growing pains.

I just hate 3rd and 8 and we throw it 2-3 yards.......

And get DR to run more when he sees green....... :ROFLMAO:

I think Nebraska has actually managed to lose yards in overtime more than once.

I'm beginning to hate google's AI:

"A composite of eight overtime losses since 2015 shows Nebraksa with a net loss of 11 yards and zero first downs on 27 plays. The Huskers have not won an overtime game since 2014."

Yeah, I don't really like defensive timeouts on 3rd/4th & Long in pressure situations like that. Obviously, I get calling one if there's an alignment issue or the coaches see a potential defensive procedural penalty, but it felt like the defense had the edge there. Looked like they called the timeout to get a glimpse of Cincy's formation and/or just talk over basics of what needed to happen next. I don't love that, especially when the opposing offense is out of timeouts. THEY have to score and THEY are running out of time. The feelings of panic and urgency in those situations are more on the offense, so keep up that pressure/intensity.

Maybe some statistics prove that calling a timeout there defensively is a good idea more often than not. I don't know. I also try not to judge those decisions exclusively based on the outcome. Obviously, the outcome is relevant, but if Nebraska gets a stop there then today the narrative would be that it was a wise move.
Yeah. I have no idea on the statistics either. And I absolutely believe that stats and analytics have there place but I guess I’m also a little old school in that I don’t think they should be followed blindly like some of these 4th down go for it calls. Nuance and feel still have a place imo and in that situation it felts like as you said they were under more pressure

Anyone watching Florida state game. Tony white’s defense is doing a great job against Alabama.
Killing it. Getting a lot of props. Talked about NU guys coming with him. Sandman playing a good game. Did Knighton patent "Death Row" for the DL? I loved that.

Announcer: They couldn't run the football....I've heard that before;)

Castellanos as a running QB KILLING them. I miss running QB's.....

Who here thinks that Rhule already has a short list for replacing the DC (like what happened with the OC last year)?

What’s sad is that most fans realized last year that Butler was a significant downgrade based off his body of work and Rhule went with him anyway. There’s got to be an analyst or two we can offer that would do better with what we have.

I get that we have injuries and attrition up front. But that doesn’t excuse the lack of preparedness by the defense during no-huddle downs or the extremely pedestrian defensive playcalling.

Maybe but Rhule has to point the thumb.

This is the era of free agency. Did they go out any get any DT's??? Maybe and I just don't know.

They got that DE who I do think will be a stud.

Come on.

They aren't going to be mistaken for the 2009 squad but they were decent for the first game.

17 points isn't bad - it took Cincinnati eight plays to go 38 yards for their first FG. And they had really good starting field position on their first TD drive.
Cincinnati was 3/10 on third down
Cincinnati averaged 2.8 yards per pass, throwing for a total of 69 yards for the game
We created two turnovers
Our run defense was pretty poor. But their QB had almost half their rush yards.
Holding the opposing QB under 170 total offense yards and the rest of their running game to 106 yards isn't terrible (we only had 113 yards rushing, on more attempts).

Granted, they probably aren't all that great overall. And we'll need to get better. But that wasn't a "fire the DC" performance. Let alone in game one.

First five game with Holgorsen as OC:
22.8 ppg; 229 passing ypg, 137 rushing ypg, 3 INTs, 4 fumbles lost

Last five games with Satterfield as OC:
17.2 ppg; 203 passing ypg; 112 rushing ypg; 7 INTs, 2 fumbles lost

Basically the Wisconsin game makes this anything more than a flat-footed tie.

He's not Kevin Cosgrove and they have two weeks to figure some things out on offense and defense. Special Teams took a big step forward but the other two parts have some work to do which is expected after Game 1. I don't think after 1 game it's time for hot takes. I always thought it was nonsense from people that thought Robinson and Hutmacher wouldn't be missed much. They are NFL players.
