Cincinnati: What Did We Learn?

Anyone watching Florida state game. Tony white’s defense is doing a great job against Alabama.
Yeah, makes me have fomo. Buuut people keep talking about that butler is a downgrade but honestly, if you just look at the stats, we had a very good defensive game. Again, all this speculation after game 1 is useless. We know more now than the offseason but still little.

He's not Kevin Cosgrove and they have two weeks to figure some things out on offense and defense. Special Teams took a big step forward but the other two parts have some work to do which is expected after Game 1. I don't think after 1 game it's time for hot takes. I always thought it was nonsense from people that thought Robinson and Hutmacher wouldn't be missed much. They are NFL players.

That defense looked rather Cosgrovian in nature and it’s going to be exposed in B1G play.

Cincinnati wasn’t doing anything outlandish when rushing the ball. The coaching was suspect (e.g. no spy on running QB, confusion during no huddle) and our DL looks very mid, as the kids would say.

We had a middling performance against a team that won’t make a bowl and will have a new coach this time next year. That’s a huge drop off that doesn’t bode well for a run-heavy conference.

How many times are you going to regurgitate the same thing? You’re annoying AF…only speaking in pessimistic speculations when in actuality you have no Texasing clue how things are going to play out.

First five game with Holgorsen as OC:
22.8 ppg; 229 passing ypg, 137 rushing ypg, 3 INTs, 4 fumbles lost

Last five games with Satterfield as OC:
17.2 ppg; 203 passing ypg; 112 rushing ypg; 7 INTs, 2 fumbles lost

Basically the Wisconsin game makes this anything more than a flat-footed tie.

I think you probably have some kind of an angle with these comments. Based on similar prior comments, I'd guess that the angle is "I doubt Holgorsen is any kind of world-beater for us." Which if that's it, I suppose I'd tend to agree.

Personally I think walking away from an opponent like Cincinnati and not putting up 28 points (which I look at as being one touchdown per quarter) is a failure, given the relative amount of talent that we have.

We'd be screwed without EJ, he's got a ton of talent. He's better than any other option we would have had this season or last with zone rushing, which Holgorsen seems to do a fair amount of.

But all in all, to get to that 28 - 31 points range against teams on our schedule like let's say, Minnesota, we'll have to be quite a bit more aggressive than we were on Thursday night.

In terms of X's & O's/concepts/resume , I'm going to take Holgorsen over Satterfield.

Who here thinks that Rhule already has a short list for replacing the DC (like what happened with the OC last year)?

I just don't think that Rhule would have sat there nervously for over nine months thinking to himself "if our defense sucks over the course of the first few games, I'll just fire Butler and bring in _______________."

That said, isn't it completely fair to guess that Butler is going to be a huge drop-off from Tony White? It's frustrating; just when we get the elite QB high school recruit and some things going for us on offense, our great D coordinator leaves.

he brought in Holgo during the season. Not saying the defense is bad or going to be bad, but I’m sure Rhule has a trip wire.

What’s sad is that most fans realized last year that Butler was a significant downgrade based off his body of work and Rhule went with him anyway. There’s got to be an analyst or two we can offer that would do better with what we have.

I get that we have injuries and attrition up front. But that doesn’t excuse the lack of preparedness by the defense during no-huddle downs or the extremely pedestrian defensive playcalling.
This post is nuts.

And I read it twice.

We are one game in, playing against a Big 12 opponent in Kansas City at 830pm.

Butler's defense was stout against the passing game, allowed 17 points and came up with the huge turnover to secure the win.

That's what the Blackshirts should do. That's what they did. And that's what they were taught.

Replace Butler ??!?! Srsly. The DC is playing with the cards he has.

What more do you want them to do?!!!

How can PFF be taken seriously on its QB grades?!?!

Reminder that anyone can become a PFF grader if you are over 18. All you need to do is take a 6 week (unpaid) self learning web course. Then each game you grade gets you $60.
