Broderick made the comment yesterday that he believes people were brought in to sabotage the NU football program. While I don't agree with that statement, I do agree with the idea that Pederson is as much to blame for the current state of affairs as the coaches and players. I also agree with Broderick's statement that there needs to be some coaches who KNOW what Husker football is like guys who have played for Nebraska and know what it means to be a Blackshirt.

So my conspiracy theory question(s) is this: Do you think Pederson would ever let a former player from the Devaney/Osborne/Solich era be a coach on today's team? The guys on 1620 mentioned Mike Minter should be the secondary coach (which I think would be awesome as would Broderick being the LB coach) And, do you think Pederson would like nothing more than to see the Blackshirt tradition disappear?

My theory? Yes, I think Pederson would like to see the Blackshirt tradition disappear especially since it's the last remaining memory of days gone by. But I also think Pederson isn't stupid enough to make that happen knowing Husker Nation would rise up and throw his a$$ outta town, contract extension or no.

Wow...

Pederson wants the defense to play bad so that the tradition of old goes away, part of the tradition that Pederson helped recruit and build back in the 80's. Yeah, that makes tons of sense. People forget that Pederson was part of all this "tradition", so thinking he is trying to sabotage it is just plain dumb.

Also, have Minter and Thomas ever coached? What are their credentials for coaching here?

We have had opportunities to bring old players back, but they need to have experience. Not just Nebraska Football experience. I really and truly don't think Pedersen understands what he is doing to the program. I really don't. Having a putz like Cassidy be Director of Football Operations is another reason. That guy is total trash.

Embrace Tradition....Don't discard it!!!!

You do realize that Pederson isn't new to the program, right?

Just because someone knows what the traditions are doesn't necessarily means he has the best interests of the program in mind.

Just playing devils advocate

He has to have the best interest's of the program in mind. The problem is, these "best interests" differ between people.

The idea that Pederson, Callahan, etc, etc came together to plot the demise of Husker football is so asinine it doesn't deserve the electricity I had to use to type this.

In that respect I agree. I think Broderick's comments that people were brought in to sabotage the program are completely off-base and un-true.

I'm not saying Pederson doesn't have the best interests of the program at heart. Nor am I saying he wants to get rid of the Blackshirt tradition (and I don't personally think he wanted to see our consecutive bowl game and winning season streak broken either). But I trust that man about as far as I can throw him. He's never done anything to make me believe I should trust him. And if what Broderick says about former players not being able to talk with current players is true, that just strengthen's my resolve to not trust him and wish up a star he gets fired or finds another job somewhere else.

Will Shields was at practice a few weeks ago. Talking to the team.

It isn't the first time and it isn't the last time.

I'm glad to hear that then. I hope more former players are given that chance.
From what I have read, there have been many players that have taken the opportunity to drop by. From what I understand, Callahan has made it abundantly clear that former players are welcome to come by, but some(like Broderick) choose to alienate themselves then be vocal about it. Broderick has always been outspoken, and has also had his foot inserted in his mouth before.

In yesterday's interview with Broderick, the last question the DJ asked was "Do you still have keys to the house?" and Broderick's answer was "Yes...well...Pederson changed the locks". He also mentioned something earlier in the interview about former players not being given access to current players.
As for Will Shields, he could have gotten on the field simply because he was a former player. But that doesn't necessarily give him access to speak with the players though.
IIRC Callahan said of Shields' visit that he did not speak directly to the players. He was there the whole week and at the game but I'm pretty sure he did not have direct contact with any players. Callahan was asked what Shields had said to the O-Line and his reply was "he didn't speak directly to them." Callahan also said they got to hear him at one of his speeches.
This was posted in the "Broderick Thomas' comments" thread.

:hmmph

So I guess it begs the question then: Who is telling the truth? Callahan or former players?

Will Shields, Mike Minter, B Thomas, Roger Craig, T Rathman and so on. I think these guys could coach. You had to pickup what was being taught to you and the way it was done to be able to play in the NFL.

Turner Gill was damn good at coaching qb's, Solich was damn good at coaching running backs and they had "no" NFL experience. As position coaches they would bring a lot of knowledge with them. How about a Mike Brown when hes finished, the list gos on and on.

GBR!!!

First of all Peterson has little influence over the coaching staff, other than who the head coach is.

Second I would LOVE Minter to be on the staff as a DB coach, as would I LOVE Grant Wistrom to be on the staff as a DL coach, Turner Gill as a QB coach.etc. But I can't really say that they DESERVE to be. Being a Husker shouldn't automatically earn you a coaching job, thats how we got into this mess in the first place when we just handed the reigns over to Solich instead of casting a net and see who was best suited for the job. Do I think Minter could be a better coach than Elmo or Busch? It's possible. Would Wistrom be better than Wyatt? Maybe. Would Gill be better than Watson? I doubt it but again, possible. But it's not a given, and they shouldn't be handed the job simply because they used to have an N on the side of their helmet at one time.

One guy however I would not want as a coach is Broderick Thomas, He runs his mouth way to much, has way to many outbursts and doesn't back half of what he says up with facts. He'd be a horrible coach, especially if he was put in a position in front of a microphone as a true representative of the program and not just someone looking in as a former player.
