Could any program compete with your "All Time" Husker team?

Just thinking of USC...QBs - Palmer and Leinart Heisman winners

RB - Simpson, Bush, Allen, Garrett, Davis, Bell, White (Charles and Lindell)

FB - Cunningham

WR - Keyshawn Johnson, Swann, Mike Williams

Oline - Yary, Munoz, Mathews, Boselli, Budde

Dline - can't think of any offhand, most likely this is their weak spot

LB - Seau, more of the Matthews Clan

DB - Lott, Polamalu, Browner, Battle

quite a bit of talent there.

That looks pretty good but I think the Huskers field a better looking bunch at every position except WR and possibly LB. Add in kickers and return specialists and actually I think we make USC look pretty plain jane. We don't even need WR's. I'd settle for a couple TE's. With our O line, backs, option qb's, and defense, game prob wouldn't even be close.

I disagree, and there's no way to prove it, so I won't debate this too long, but the only place I see a clear Husker advantage is D-line. Frazier was a better QB but with teams like these I think you need to be real strong in both the passing and running games so I would probably rather have a QB like Palmer if this was really possible. Sacrilege, I know.

In any case, the notion that the USC lineup is plain jane is just hilarious.

How about OU off the top of my head:

QB: Bradford for passing, and it you wanted to mix it up with the wishbone, bring in Hollieway or whoever you think the best of those QBs was.

RB: Sims, Peterson, Griffin, Washington, Pruitt, Owens, Vessels

FB: King is the best i can remember from the wishbone days

WR: Broyles, McDonald

TE: Jackson

Oline: I don't know/remember the names, and they may not quite be the pipeline, but it'd be a good one

Dline: Selmon brothers, Harris, McCoy, Casillas

LB: Lehman, Bosworth

DB: Williams, Strait

I'm pretty confident an all time Husker greats team would stack up well against any other single teams all time greats. Heck, I think an all star Husker team would do fine against the best combined team from all other college teams. It is scary to think of what we could put on the field; the good old days of the pipeline, the backs and QB's we've had, and the D woulld be 2nd to none. Besides Suh, who from 2000 on makes this team?

When putting teams like this together, wouldn't it make a lot more sense to look at how they did play in the NFL? I mean the NFL teams are for the most part supposed to be fairly constant top to bottom in terms of talent. NFL teams are made up of the best of the best. If we're going to make a college team of the greats from each team, it would see that this would be a lot more comparable to the NFL than the actual college game. If we put up an offense against another college team's all time defense, it would seem that an option running QB might not be that attractive.

There's no doubt that the all-time Husker team is awesome. LB is certainly the weak spot, as I don't see a stalwart inside. WR just lacks depth. JR and Fryar are about as good of a pair as anyone would have, but the drop-off is huge after that.

I'd sum it up as "The All-Time Husker team can compete with any other", but to ask if any other could compete with ours is either not thinking much in depth about some of those other teams. or giving too much credit for guys like Jason Peter and Ralph Brown, who were really good but not when you are talking all-time greats. Not that every position has to be filled with a Suh, Rimington, Frazier, etc., since no school can do that.

Our DL would be the strong-point of this team. It would be the main reason for victory. Imagine trying to deal with 4 lineman who all deserve double-teams?

Nope. Tommie Frazier is arguably the greatest option quarterback ever; no NFL career. Matt Leinart is one of the greatest pro-style college quarterbacks ever, we're talking ELITE college talent, and has sucked it up in the pros.

If he had stuck around and wasn't messed up by injuries I think Marcus Dupree would have probably been one of OU's all time greats and he'd probably be on that list as well.

Somehow guys like Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, Phillip Rivers, etc, succeed in the NFL, not having played in the SEC, while JaMarcus Russell flopped, and Mitch Mustain fared much better in the SEC than the Pac-10. The SEC is the best conference out there, but the gap isn't that big.

In any case, I understand your point that the level of alt-time teams might require a different offense than the option, but it's all an academic exercise anyway. You're dealing with guys of different eras playing different styles of games, it's a big guess how they compare. As far as using the NFL as a yardstick, Rozier and Phillips didn't do much in the NFL due to injuries and other issues, but they were better than Craig and Green in college.
