Dana Holgorsen Hired as Offensive Coordinator

Not trying to call you out, because I don't know where you've been on all these guys.  I just think the flow is interesting to watch.

Frost was stupid to not have a dedicated special teams coach.  Now we have one, we're still terrible and people want him fired.

Frost and Rhule were stupid to not have a dedicated QB coach.  Now it didn't look there was any difference for much of the year and people think he should be gone.

People were freaking out about White leaving last year and insisting we should pay whatever it takes to keep him.  Now half the crowd wants him fired.

People insisted Raiola should be fired and was only kept to get his nephew.  Now the consensus seems to be the OL is performing pretty well.

People were ecstatic that we got an NFL DC and DC-in-waiting to coach DBs.  Now our DBs may be our most underperforming unit.

We sure employ a whole bunch of coaches who seem know how to coach then forget how to coach on a yearly - if not weekly - basis.
Frost had cigar chewing geriatric Harry Potter as his QB coach until his last season. And I think we'd all agree that Bill Busch was an excellent hire. Raiola took over a year to get his unit to show significant progress, but year-over-year they have improved and this season they are doing good despite injuries. So, I guess the take away is that assistant coaches across various units are important, and it's important to hire quality assistants and get the bad ones off the bus.

Hopeful statement

“I’m happy being here right now. I love what I’m doing," Holgorsen said. "I had more fun on Saturday than I’ve had in a long time. There’s an element of being head coach 13 years not being able to enjoy it like I did on Saturday. My history is calling offensive plays and offensive football. I really enjoy it — a lot.”

The Huskers also had a lot of fun, putting up 44 points against the Badgers, Nebraska's most in a game under Matt Rhule and most against a Power 4 opponent since a 56-7 blowout of Northwestern on Oct. 2, 2021.

Holgorsen has already talked about not liking the consulting job he took with TCU earlier this season because, “If I don’t have any control over it, I don’t wanna do it.” He has a level of control at Nebraska but it'd certainly be understandable if he wants to run his own program again.

He may be happy just having control of the offense. But I am sure to stay he will want full control to change what he wants

All good.  No offense taken.

To the bolded, players as well...

I was against the Satt hire from the jump.  Friends and family USC fans and were delighted to see him go.  His total offensive rankings averaged to be about 87 IIRC, from his almost 8 years and 3 stops.  Throw in he was not the 1st choice for Rhulle at Temple or Nu and was cause for concerns.  The move to TE coach was baffling as well.  At Baylor *(2018 or 2019) as TE coach, his 2 TE's had 7 catches, zero TD's and less than 40 yards..Not exactly a glowing resume.  Throw in Dana getting 2 "new" TE's playing at a high level and Fidone sitting out says he didn't develop/use what he had.  Dana in presser said that Fidone had th ebest practice since he's (Dana) been here.  Set the standard and expected guys to live up to it.

McGuire in his first collegiate job didn't need it to be in the pressure cooker that is NU and B1G football.  Not a place to learn on the fly.  And again, Dana calling his position group out.

Butler gets a pass.  Bills DB's were/are legit.  Of course that could be talent....I also think there might be a disconnect/learning curve with his ideas vs White's on D.  Plus not having his players...Frustration on D is we have a game like OSU and then a game like UCLA.....

Donnie on OL was a come on man for me, but if it got DR here it was worth it.  I was not sure that they could do Dana's gap and counter schemes, but did great against Wisky.  So personnel and play calling appears to have made a difference even with the same players.  So I am inclined to think they are better than the W-L record, which is oftn how I judge improvement.  Although many on the board have showed the statistical improvements.

Foley on ST's....Man we stink there and have stunk.  Finally got a kicker and Buschini doing well.  Return game continues to be non-existent and baffling returns, fair catches, etc.....But we have been bad there for years.

Initial comment was about the salary for Dana, the Houston salary and buyouts.  Trying to see where we could save money.  If Dana is on staff, I see no reason for Thomas.  I'd look at a new WR coach. Unsure how Satt stays coaching TE's with that salary.  Does he take a salary cut?

It's interesting that Satt is the TE coach and Holgorsen has spent a lot of time talking about the TE position, needing to create competition...the whole Fidone issue...etc.

I knew Dana as an air raid guy.  Was a little concerned, but his teams, save one year with Graham Harrell, had better rushing rankings than we have under Satt for the past 2 years.  Really like his run game against Wisky. Saw some different gap schemes and counters that his running game was known for and we had some great success. Scheme and personnel made a difference.  Even with our same players.

With the roster limits, identifying talent and more importantly developing them will be the key to long term success.  Just the few changes Dana made in 3 weeks, with guys he didn't recruit and doesn't know, showed me he can develop and hold guys accountable.  He's interviewing for the job in real time, with a lot of the pieces and staff he will have to work with and got us bowling.....I like it so far.

And seeing Nate and Luke get more reps makes you wonder what Satt is/isn't seeing.  I just don't see him staying.  I do applaud his integrity and work ethic to stay.  It's gotta be tough seeing the success and accolades heaped on Dana and still stay to do your job.  As coach, not a fan, but I admire his character.  Even if he is getting paid....

Yeah, he's not here next year.  He obviously hasn't worked out here as a coach.  But, I do highly respect his attitude and work during this transition.

So......why is he available?

Yes, you and I are both 'run the damn ball' guys - if you control the ground you control the game.   Old Nebraska could do that with pure toughness/strength, talent and speed - we didn't have to pass much.  We just had a consistent, top notch OL that could make it happen.   The game has changed.  Every top team has a strength and conditioning program that would rival ours, NIL and Transfer portal has somewhat leveled the field whereby speed and talent is spread out to more teams.  So now it is more about getting guys out into space.  And I think Dana does a good job of doing that.  He did it with a fairly balanced approached.  He evaluated talent and did what most of us thought Rhule should have done a long time ago - simplify the playbook and promote EJ to the top RB spot.  DR and EJ responded positively to the opportunity.  That is why I am hopeful in our game against Iowa. Another week of development and evaluation and I think Dana will squeeze more juice out of our offense.

Obviously, Wisconsin was not prepared for what we did to them and the little changes Holgorsen has made.  It will be interesting to see if Iowa can prepare better now that they have our last game on film.

And even with that, I'm sure we just saw a small sampling of what Holgorsen had in mind.  Another week of prep hopefully will keep Iowa guessing.
