defense next year

ok, if the calling on D was not conservative, then we must not have the athletes to make the sacks anymore? no, we had to hold back to help the pathetic DB's we had in the backfield last year and when we didn't, the guys never got to the qb. don't remember any team winning any awards for having the highest blitz percentage of the season? or that stat making them a "force to be reckoned with", although that was a nice comment coming from Mack Brown. the fact is, there was a huge drop off in aggressive defensive play last year, that no one expected. we better hope the DB's play a lot better this year, 'cause with our schedule it could get ugly.

951, you are talking about guys that played LB at 205, over 10 years ago!!! Its not 1995! I am willing to take any bet that Culbert will not be playing LB. He was recruited for the secondary and he will stay there. I have never once heard the coaches mention anything about there even being a chance to move him to LB.
If you would have read my post the first thing I said was that I’m not saying anybody is switching positions. All I am saying is that if they thought Culbert was athletic and tenacious enough to play LB he would not have to add a whole bunch of weight.

Bleedin red I don’t know how old you are but 1995 was not that long ago. O-line men were just as big and strong,TEs were big and could block. You act like humans have evolved into some sort of super natural creatures in the last 5-10 years. There is no way anybody can make me believe that the 95 defense would not be successful today (all the way down to the 205lbs LBs) You just need a coach that knows how to use his personnel.

Blitzes are just that blitzes if your personnell isnt good enough to make it work. What i saw was blitz after blitz where backers were running into lineman and too slow to get there.

I get that every defense has assignments, what i dont believe is that once the play is progressing its a good policy to MAKE SURE TO STAY IN OUR SPOT as ruud and co did.

No sense in arguing with a know it all. you wanna throw stats out about number of blitzes etc and what other coaches say fine

I want a defense that attacks with the best athletes possible and if that means Octo headhunts over ruud with a thumb up his arse then so be it.

I want a defense that plays the best players and that hasnt happened yet.

stats are just that stats. they dont win games. show me the stat that says how much our blitzes worked, it would be laughable.

and yes freelancing does happen. Terrell farley is listed on this post more than once. he freelanced all the time, in fact he was out of position more than in position. for example when he played there was no defense where his position would line up in a 3 point stance yet he repeatedly lined up that way. Once game when he had 2 picks both came when he was completely on the wrong side of the field, this is fact iknow it to be fact thats all im going to say.

I know LB and what they do Demarrio Williams would not have played on this defense in my opinion because he wouldnt have been disciplined enough.

I just hope that we play the best players and unleash their potential.

Ask Mack Brown who he'd rather see on the field, Octo or Ruud

stop throwin out meaningless stats. Our defensive mentality is BEND DONT BREAK and that wont get it done when necessary

Look guys lets face it. Our lb play last year was tainted by the fact that our secondary was very weak. Our lbs were constantly trying to help our secondary. We need to improve our secondary play this year so that our lbs can be more aggressive, and can "free lance" to a certain degree. If we have improved secondary play, we will be able to use man-to-man coverage more often thus freeing up our lbs.

Oh yeah, I totally agree…It’s not 1995 any more (or 1997). And those little 205 pound linebackers who played for the Huskers during the five year span where we won three national titles and only lost three games … they just wouldn’t make it in today’s version of college football. You know, College football these days has no room for players who blitz like they are on fire and hit like Mack trucks. You know the guys I’m talking about, little 205 pounds linebackers who are sure tacklers and can still drop into pass coverage with a wide receiver, you know, the guys that blitz so fast that there is no running back quick enough to pick it up (let alone a poor tackle or tight end), you know the kind of guys who regularly make plays against talented teams like Miami, Oklahoma, CU, K-State, Florida State, Florida, Tennessee, UCLA, Washington etc. Yeah, you are right, we could never find a place on the roster for a guy like T-Far, or Jamel Williams, or Eric Johnson, or Tony Ortiz…Yeah, guys like that would be of no use to us these days. I mean really, the players have gotten SOOOO much bigger in the past 10 years. We beat up on the Florida’s and the Miami’s of the world back then, and of course we put the wood to Peyton Manning, but none of those teams had any linemen over 325 or so pounds, linemen these days must go a good 450-500 pounds. And of course, the running backs back then, they were puny too. I mean, guys like Jamaal Lewis…what a midget! Yeah, I agree, we have no place for linebackers like the ones we had in the `90s. :sarcasm Acually insert sarcasm throughout this whole post. I still can't believe there are people on here who think the talent has gotten so much better in the past 10 years. The fact is, with scholarship limits, there are few teams top to bottom as talented as the ones we played even 10 years ago. And, speed, now more than ever, is the most important thing on defense.
