Defensive Set

I am still in the Husker Hangover mode (probably the same hangover many of our players had at game time). But I am sincerely curious to see what our defensive sets looked like. I did some rewinding during the game trying to figure out why there was no one in the secondary on their upteenth long run to the outside.

I know that Fisher seemed to be just crashing inside and falling down on every play, so that's one person out of the picture. But where were our safeties?

I saw Evans getting blocked out of the play on every single long run. But shouldn't there be support?

I just want to see some wide shots of the field to see where our players were. I'm curious to know if we did adjust at all or if we played the same basic set the whole game. I also want to know if Wiscy's presnap adjustments led to all of the confusion on our defense. Did they do this when we played them the first time?

Oh, and what was that amazing Amoeba set that Wiscy ran on defense? Two linemen and then four guys jumping around and stuff in the middle. That was the best defense I've ever seen. They walked in on Martinez unblocked the entire game.

Thanks for any images or clarity you can provide. I'm looking for analysis here... not judgement or anger. Just straight up football talk.

Yeah I would say the presnap adjustments along with the misdirection killed us all game long. When Ball got to the edge and beat Santos on one play I just about fell off my chair. No way he should have been able to get to the edge on any of our LB'S if they were lined up correctly. Also, it seemed like the man in motion on every play, had the whole D confused about whose responsibility it was. Yes, Fisher also got caught out of position ALOT I guess so did Compton for that matter. I could go on, but I think I would be adding pretty much all of our Defense. Our D-Line needs to get healthy for next year after watching them mow over Meridith and Martin all gam e long it was obvious how much Baker did in the middle. They went after every weak spot we had and just continued to pound it over and over and over. Absoutley terrible for our staff to let this happen as well. It was a complete failure from top to bottom.

Regardless of sets, at this stage of their careers, how do senior safeties continue to take bad angles......?

No outside contain, bad angles and no adjustments. My sons 7yr old flag football team is better prepared for their opponents.

I am always at a loss trying to understand how a defensive player can stand motionless, with feet planted firmly on the field in the hopes the oncoming ball carrier will run right to him. That tells me said player has no confidence at all in his own abilities to tackle the ball carrier one on one, or he is afraid of initiating contact.

Does anyone really think Montee Ball is not going to go right around a flatfooted, stationary linebacker or defensive back, rather than head right towards him? Especially when he has ten yards of open space on either side of the defender?

Audible into a QB run and let our OL just run forward. Beck pissed himself when they went to that set. IMO, the toss and QB draw was open all night iwth that backyard crap.

Or Power I with Rex and Cross. Run right into the mouth of that crap and knock em on their a$$. We DID NOTHING last night that leads me to believe beck or Paps have any clue about how to adjust

They only ran that set on passing downs - which were way too often

That's what I was thinking. If we would of ran it right at them or ran a damn SCREEN (Beck, cough cough) we could have busted it big. How they lined up was basically like having their DT's lined up 5 to 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Major  for Beck this game.

Again, like all season in big games, Beck pees his pants. That crap D scheme was ours for the picking last night, but he was so fixated on pocket passing to think about screens, or PA or power or draws or toss sweeps etc............

So no images? I was hoping for some real old school film breakdown.

I didn't even think of just pounding it in their faces on that f***ing Amoeba thing. It is so obvious. They have four guys standing five yards off the line of scrimmage? POUND IT right at them. We'd make 5 yards easy. Maybe not a first down, but punch them in the face.

We came out in our 4-3 with Ciante at true corner on Abbrederis and 2 safeties that lined up 20 yards off the ball. Kind of hard to stop a good running attack with that. Then the fact that we are still shifting our defense when the ball is snapped is a recipe for disaster.

With that said, our guys were there to make the tackle at or near the line of scrimmage almost every time and whiffed. Total lack of effort, game smarts, and intensity on defense.

Really the oustide stuff was about Safeties filling alleys which they did, but didn't make the tackle.. You would like to get an extra hat involved, but we got reached at the D-end and that caused us to loose the extra man..

As far as what Wisky did on D.. That's hard to block when your assignment changes pre & post snap... You're asking linemen to move in space not a great proposition!

This is a friggen defense that BO used last year very effectively. They beat us with our own defense. So...at what point when Bo is developing this defense does he go to his OC and say..."Tim, if you saw this defense, how would you counter it? What play does this leave vulnerable?

Do they even have conversations like this? I would think this would be a common conversation any time something new is being developed on one side of the ball.
