Dienhart: Things I learned at Nebraska practice

Call me pessimist, but I think they are putting too much stock into Martinez the runner.
Pessimist.

I could show you game tape all afternoon of what happens when the pocket breaks down if you would like. I wont deny his straight line speed.
Would this be before or after his injuries?
Both. He just doesn't know how to use his athleticism when things are crashing down on him. He either braces for a sack, or tries to run straight up through the pocket. Doesn't mean I think hes a bad qb. But if there isnt a hole there for a designed running play, his ability to break to the outside or shake a few defenders in the backfield to get to the outside really isn't that great.

I get what you're saying Lyons and I agree that his escapability is more than lacking, but as soon as I say that I see film of him actually dropping his shoulder or making a throw/run outside the pocket and it gives me some optimism. But then I recall all those scrambles where he runs into the back of his linemen... he's so damn confusing sometimes.

I think it was the Northwestern game they were showing this week where he made some people miss, shook off some tackles, and dragged a few defenders. I know they aren't a great defense but none the less it's no small feat to do that to any D1 athlete.

So we're saying a Freshman panicked when the pocket collapsed on him? That may be the first time that's ever happened.

And we're saying an injured player wasn't as good as he was pre-injury? Again, this may be a first.

we have the worst luck.

I see what you are saying. He does need to work on his escapability and his decision making to be more D. Robinson of Michigan when he decides to run it. He has at least corrected most of his fumbling tendencies that he had as a Freshman. The way he held the ball most of the time was the primary reason. Hopefully with another year under his belt and a hopefully improved O-line we should see even more improvement.

martinez's pocket presence will get better with experience, we gotta remember this guy didnt play a whole lot of qb before he got to NU, and then once he got here he played alot of wr on the practice squad if im not mistaken. he will show major strides in his pocket presence and in his decision making in general. plus him feeling back to 100% is huge for his confidence, when a player is consistently worrying about his injury it hampers his play. that shouldnt be the case this year, plus all the time he put in this off season im sure helped him see the big holes in his game and he probably worked on said holes

The 3-4 bit is very intriguing. Play to your strength (quality and numbers) and limit your weaker area (quality and numbers). Would seem to be a no-brainer...

@HowardGriffith QB Tommy Armstrong has a chance to be a superstar. Quick and elusive wow! #cornhuskers

@BTNDaveRevsine Armstrong is really impressive physically. We all think he'll be a big-time. Wouldn't shock me if he's 2nd team QB this yr

@swmckewonOWH BTN guys raving about Tommy Armstrong. Tim Beck was high on this kid for a long time. #huskers
With all the hoopla here, do you think Stanton stays commited?
Yes.
Yeah, I doubt if he's afraid of a little competition.

I think Stanton would redshirt and be a star when he is the starter, the way it should be, not come in and be a four year starter. It allows him the time to be ready to be a backup and then the starter, just like in the old days (like in the 90's when kids played as juniors and seniors not freshmen and sometimes sophomores).

Said this last night - will reiterate - Neb is (19-0) last 2 yrs when rushing for 185+ yds as a team, They are (0-8) when they don't.

Run the ball, stop the run, win the game.

This.
I agree. In our hey day, we ran the ball like no ones business. Pass enough to keep the D honest and use one to set up the other. For Bshirt, bring back Super D. I keep hearing about our number of corners and their size. Slide one up to the 2003 Super D mode and unleash the beast.

Watching BTN's Nebraska preview, I was pretty impressed by Taylor's interview. Who is this comfortable, well-spoken young man speaking openly at the BTN desk about his offseason changes? Totally different guy than we've seen in the past.

Yes, I'm in my preseason kool-aid drinking phase.
