are you also going to tell me the tariffs on lumber didn't raise lumber prices?   lol
That’s a nice weave and dodge as we are talking about Steel.   However since you went there, maybe check the price of Timber from Jan 2016-Jan 2020.   You had about a 6 month blip of higher prices in 2018 and beyond that the trend line was pretty normal.  That timeframe takes place Before and after the start of the tariff.

You can find the data at statista.com if you want to look for it.

the biggest price increases in the lumber market was OSB prices when the tariffs on canadian lumber started.  they were a major source for us and they jumped up pretty good when trump started those tariffs.  those tariffs are still in place.  wish biden had taken them off but that would have required renegotiating the entire NAFTA again.

Here is another extremely anecdotal bit I’ve noticed with the local job scene. I maybe had 3-4 people stop by or call here looking for a job from all of January thru November 2024. It was similar in 2023 also. But post election (Dec 24 & Jan 25) I’ve had at least 12 people call or stop in looking for welding jobs. That is a very noticeable jump above what I typically see.  I asked the last 3 if they had been recently laid off from somewhere around here and they all said no and had different stories.  So it seems to be a more general thing than maybe one employer slowing down.

Might be premature to lay it at Trump’s feet but it never happened while Biden was in office. Usually it is oilfield guys looking (and that’s not what we need) but these were mostly people with the kind of experience I would consider.
