Frank Okam Hired as Defensive Line Coach?

How do you know he was not?
How do I know he (the DC) was not involved in hiring a defensive line coach?

At least I think that’s what you’re asking. I have no clue. I asked bc I genuinely don’t know if that’s a HC call or if the HC asks the DC who they would want to coach a position on the defense then go out and make the hire.

It seems like this is a Matt Rhule hire bc of the previous history the two have shared. I dont think there is any ties between Okam and Aurich.

I'm not sure why I have to keep saying this but no one complained about Terrance Knighton.
the timing is going to kill us again. The one benefit is that Frank has coached CFB very recently so at least he has inroads. But we obviously whiffed. Not having a DL coach by now is legitimately inexcusable. Rhule is again showing that this job is too big for him. The handling of hiring personnel is going to get Rhule fired.

At least he has coached in college and was recently Toledo's d-line coach for the 2023-2024 season. The thing that worries me is it's another buddy hire bc he was MR's d-line coach at Temple and Baylor and while nobody complained about Terrence Knighton mind you he had a better roster to work with with Ty and Nash being here. It's like MR doesn't trust/or have enough friends to not keep going back to the water well. Im not saying he won't or can't help improve the d-line but sometimes going outside your comfort zone has better results and sometimes they don't.

Ty and Nash were pretty unremarkable until Potroast showed up.

I think Knighton did a really great job of not only coaching but firing up the guys he was coaching.

However, between him, Tony White, and Rhule, he/they did a pretty terrible job of getting anybody else ready for year 3 on the defensive line.

It doesn't always have to be this black & white thing of "a coach sucked" versus "the coach was amazing." I think with Knighton there was good & bad for sure.

Ok fair point that it definitely hurts portal recruiting to take another NFL guy.

I remember watching Okam play DT for the Omaha Nighthawks in 2012 before the league folded.

Really like a couple things from the college coaching part of his bio. He was a finalist for Football Scoop Defensive Line Coach of the Year in 2019 at Baylor. (Fun fact: that same year Phil Snow won their Defensive Coordinator of the Year award.)

Second while at Toledo in 2024 he had 10 different Defensive linemen get at least 1 sack. That's teaching them to get after the QB!

Yeah, cool! Was he announced today or are we waiting for the Texans to lose? I’m sure we’ve got him locked like Elijah Robinson?
That seems like a bad strategy when you need a coach here now trying to get guys from the portal. Waiting weeks more and many DL will be enrolled elsewhere already.
