Freshmen QBs Bush and Darlington relishing chance to compete

Scott Frost started 5 games at safety his Sophomore season at Stanford, and was called back to QB when Steve Stenstrom got hurt. Frost didn't look good in the three games he played at QB and Bill Walsh informed him he had no future at the position, that Butterfield would be the starter the next year, and Scott would do best to concentrate on being a good safety -- which he was. He was drafted as a safety by the Jets. Despite Walsh's advice, Frost was determined to play QB in college and there was only one big name program who would have him.

As for Tommie Frazier: he wasn't highly recruited as a quarterback. Same as Frost and lots of other guys who were the best player on their high school team. The were highly recruited as athletes: teams would find a position for them. But most programs saved QB for the strong-armed non-hyphenate. Maybe Notre Dame would have let Tommie start, and yes, Notre Dame is a big name program, but that hardly negates the general point that Nebraska is rarely in the running for blue chip passing quarterbacks, and has recruited guys specific to our offensive system, where you can keep your job with a 50% -- or lower -- completion rate.

thanks Guy. I was just gonna post that after some more digging I did find a sight that labeled him as "QB/S". So then I was getting unsure of myself. I guess I took it wrong. Seemed like Buster is insinuating he went there to be a safety. And I was like 10 at the time. I just didnt recall him going there for anything other than qb.

Darlington appears to throw the nicest ball of all the QBs, which doesn't surprise me. Bush has a long way to go as a passer, which also doesn't surprise me.

From the outside looking in it always appeared that Walsh told Frost..."Hey, if you come here I'll give you a chance at QB. But, if that doesn't workout, you're going to have to play Safety." When Scott got there, Walsh basically said..."You're a safety". After two years Scott decided he really wanted to play QB and came back to Nebraska.

I think that was the case. But when Bill Walsh - Joe Montana's groomer - comes to your house in Wood River and says you could be his next quarterback at Stanford, it's hard to say no.

Stanford not a bad place to get a degree from either.

But he's got stats, and significant ones as a soph, as qb. So I have a hard time believing he was slotted to safety right away. But like i said, I was a young pup. I just remember him slicing and dicing-single handidly-my high school of which I went and watched just about every game. AC beat up Wood River pretty routinely by 20-30-40 points before Frost and after, but man, when he was there, that one guy alone made it a different ballgame.
