Fumble Reviewed

This is a little off topic but sort of related...toward the end of the game (cant remember exactly) we punted and the punt landed out of bounds around the ISU 30, the refs blew the whistles and all of the players stopped going after the ball. After the ball landed out of bounds and the whistles blew the ball bounced back onto the field and back-spun up to about the ISU 45. Our players just watched it roll up cause the play had been blown dead, no one was even looking at the ball they were walking back to the sidelines. What no one in the booth noticed was that when the ref spotted the ball he did not go to where the ball bounced out of bounds he went all the way up to where the ball stopped rolling. ISU had some sort of penalty on the play and instead of marking it off from where the ball bounced OB they marked it off from where the ball stopped rolling about 15 yards upfield thus pretty much negating the penalty yardage...just another weird thing that raises my eyebrows. Anyone else notice this?
I just watched all three of our second half punts looking for this. Didn't find it.

Our final punt with 45 seconds left went out of the endzone.

Before that, we punted at 6:45, it was fair caught at the 35.

Before that, we punted at 9:07, it landed at the ISU 47 and went almost straight out of bounds.

Those were our only second half punts.

It was with 5:17 left in the second right after kinnie dropped that 3rd and 2 pass...
The ref went to where the ball went out of bounds in the air. You can see him go up the sideline with his arm up.

Oh, good call, scratch all of this. Sorry, I had had a few beers at the time and can barely make out what's happening on espn3...

Yeah I think you're right. That would explain why he didn't care that Carl was on the field. They always mark the ball further down that it looks like they should when it goes out of bounds.

Everyone feels like the refs screw your team. I mean my God its part of the game. You always look at it thru the eyes of your team we all do it. If games are close and you lose its easy to blame the refs and not give credit to the other team for playing a great game. The big xii is known for crappy officials its been that way since 1996. I'm sure people will be bitching about calls next year in the big x.

Yahtzee! You're right on the mark.

It's just so much fun to conjure up conspiracy theories though ;)

I was at this game, and this play really bothered me. Not only should the play have been stopped like all of you have mentioned, but the ref that spotted the ball closest to Helu, ruled him down. The only ref that called it a fumble was the ref that was taking an earful from Paul Rhodes. The thing that makes me most mad, is that in that situation where you cant really tell if it was a fumble, isnt it proper to rule in favor of the offense and then go back and review it to check. Plus, they ruled it Neb ball, and then met on the field for an extended period of time of just talking to rule it a fumble. I just feel that the right thing to do would be to rule, on the field, in favor of the ballcarier and then they can review it. Even some of the Iowa State fans thought he was down, and that it was handled pretty weird.

We're the Big 12's brightest hope this year. They shouldn't be screwing us, they should be saving us, if there is a conspiracy going on.

Unfortunately that's not how they see it. All they see is Nebraska heading toward the exit sign, and they can't wait for the door to hit us on the way out.

Everyone thinks the refs are out to get their team. I don't think the refs are 'out to get us' this year. If I remember correctly it was hard to tell whether or not he was down or not. It was ruled a fumble on the field and without conclusive evidence then you can't overturn it. And if I'm remembering correctly there wasn't conclusive evidence.
And it was only ruled a fumble after ISU HC sent the official on his side of the field to change it. The official closest to the play called him down, but then changed his mind when the 2nd official came running in.

This is EXACTLY what made me furious with this play. The one ref called him down. Then they CHANGED THE RULING ON THE FIELD to a fumble. Just by doing that caused us the fumble. There was not enough evidence to overturn the call on the field. So, if the call had remained that he was down, the call again would not have been overturned, and the Huskers would have held on to the ball. Just rediculous.

Well if we are getting screwed in some way this team better take that to heart and start playing to their capabilities. This is personal and they need to make sure we leave this conference with that trophy.

This. They'll be doing us no favors.

And this.

Nope. No conspiracy. Not even close.

Ineptitude? Possibly. You'd have to watch a heapin' helpin' of football games, college and pro, in which you weren't highly vested in one team and add up the number of calls you could accurately make on the field in a split second and divide them by the number of calls that are wrong even after booth reveiw, and decide if specific referees are inept or if refereeing in general is doomed to imperfection.

Nebraska has had its share of lucky calls go our way in every Big 12 game. Iowa State could even make a case they were jobbed. If my conspiracy radar were to go up, it would have been on Iowa State's third down play from the one-yard line where everyone in the stadium and on TV saw the entire Iowa State team surge over the goal line, but none of the refs called it a touchdown until they were forced to. That was weirder than any call that went against Nebraska.

The whiniest fans on every team in every sport think the refs are conspiring against them, which is a sure sign that they're not.
