What I was referring to was that we didn't have #1-5 recruiting class after #1-5 recruiting class like some of the coastal schools enjoy.
thats funny....you think you could coach the HUSKERS :hmmphcan't agree with that. he has no head coaching experience whatsoever.
Yes talent did flock to NU when we were winning NCs, just before T.O. retired NU had the highest recruiting class EVER in the history of college football. i will step back and let you jump on the Calahan wagon stay there my friend....be prepared to become a browns fan. Why does everyone involve other people and use them as references? Dave Wandstat, Tim Brown, completely different and unrelated. Rathman has a longer stint with working with pro players than the afore mentioned Huskers, tons more exp. never mind im sure im dealing with someone who depends on sportscenter and the big red page for information. My point Exactly, heat of the moment thought....thats how we will be selecting our next head coach when Callahan departs to the promise land of pro football. Tom Rathman has recruiting potiential Callahan can only dream of, talent will flock to NU. To learn the west coast offense from someone who won a superbowl surrounded by the greatest players ever in the game of pro football? Tom would have his choice in offensive coordinators, imagine Ronnie Lott putting on a clinic for our defensive backs? The best part is Rathman would be happy being the head football coach for NU for the rest of his life.I think he just gave away that he is a troll................ <_<Your referring to "us husker fans" as if you aren't part of "this fanbase" and I may speak for a few people when I say that the whole "Pelini for HC" was a heat of the moment passion, and not of rational thought.this is why intelligent people dont mess with message boards, they are solving real problems in real life or accomplishing real goals. someone on here please tell me where Callahan got his first coaching gig? where did Bo Pelini get his first head coaching job? and who in thier right mind broke down and gave Jimmy Johnson a head coaching position? how did these people become proven? not long ago half of you "brainiac" HUSKER fans wanted Bo Pelini to be the next head coach at NU..... where was his proven record? 97% of you people didnt know who Pelini was. Had it not Been for Monte Kiffin He would still be drying towels in some training room in the NFL. give me a break....80% of you people were calling for Tom Osbornes head in the early 90s, he had only one head coaching job in his life, who gave him the shot? back off with the proven record stuff. Experience is the best teacher, Rathman has been to the mountain top in pro football. He is a man who can teach pro quality technique to young pro quality players.
No offense, but unless God is coaching at NU talent will never "flock" to NU. Talent didn't just "flock" to NU when TO was coaching and we were winning 3 NC in 4 years. How many 18 year old kids graduating high school even remember Rathman playing much less who he is? I think you might be tooting his horn just a little loud. Just because Rathman won a Superbowl under a coach who founded the West Coast offense doesn't mean much. Look at Dave Wanstadt. He was tutored under Jimmie Johnson, yet he doesn't even hold a candle to Jimmie. Notre Dame didn't hire Tim Brown as their HC even though he's done a lot for the school in terms of helping get kids to look at them. I don't believe Rathman has done this for NU. I don't doubt Rathman would be happy at NU for the rest of his life, but so would several other potential coaches. Why aren't you tooting Scott Frosts horn? He was under Walsh's watchful eye at QB for two seasons at Stanford and has some coaching background. He won a NC here at NU. Or, you could toot Tommie's horn also except for the fact that he was a flop in his first HC job. Why Rathman over some of these other guys?
Tom does want to coach at NU. And I wasnt saying bring him in to be HC now....originally i mentioned him being a running backs coach, slash, OC.....You are making a lot of assumptions in that post, but the main assumption still goes unaddressed.this is why intelligent people dont mess with message boards, they are solving real problems in real life or accomplishing real goals. someone on here please tell me where Callahan got his first coaching gig? where did Bo Pelini get his first head coaching job? and who in thier right mind broke down and gave Jimmy Johnson a head coaching position? how did these people become proven? not long ago half of you "brainiac" HUSKER fans wanted Bo Pelini to be the next head coach at NU..... where was his proven record? 97% of you people didnt know who Pelini was. Again, you are assuming
A) he wants to coach.
B) He'd be good at coaching at a high profile Div I school.
C) He'd want to coach at NU.
Just because someone was a good player in a sport doesn't mean he or she will be able to coach it. Not only be able to coach, but be a head coach at a high profile university right out of the gate. All the coaches you mentioned didn't start out as head coaches at some huge college without some king of coaching at that level or higher. Hell Pelini hasn't and, if you ask me, won't be a head coach.
That's all I am saying. I will never understand how some people automatically know that person A will be a good coach with no more evidence than "he was a good player".
There will not be another Osborne. There won't be another Devaney. Period.
no, players need to learn the system and adjust to speed....by the time a player gets to the NFL 90% are good enough to be there and development is more tweeking than anything. Tom dont have to coach the QB or linebackers, he could play the role bowden plays in florida. read what you are saying and truly claim Rathman as a non candidate. This thread/topic is going no where. Rathman has no experience as a head coach or coordinator. Just because he played running back and coached running backs in a west coast offense does not make him a guru. There's a lot more involved in coaching then what you're saying. I don't think NFL coaches do much less than college coaches and you're saying that NFL players don't need coaching or grooming. You think Brady Quinn is going to step into Cleveland and win the Super Bowl? You think Peyton just walked into Indy and was the NFL MVP? Players need to develop in the pros as much as college. Rathman has NEVER coached a passing system, has NEVER coached a quarterback and been around the development of one and has NEVER coached an offense/defense. You have absolutely no argument to make him a head coach other than he wants to come, was a former husker and played in the west coast offense and won a super bowl. And how is Rathman a pioneer in the offense? He played in it, sure, but he's no pioneer. He didn't help develop it.
If you want to looby someone for a position (and one thats not even available) you better be able to, as you would put it, "intelligently" argue for why they should be put there.
I understand.....Tom was asked if he would be intrested in coaching at NU after frank was fired, he also mentioned the offense would change. he was no longer looked upon as a HC candidate. Pederson, with time running out, jumped to the Callahan decision because he was the best choice at the time. mind you callahan was only a HC for 2 yrs at oakland, and the oakland team that went to the superbowl was the team jon gruden developed. callahan merely played "bobby bowden". his 2nd season began the destruction of the raiders we know now. nobody was blowing up bills phone after he was released from the raiders, how could bill turn down the NU position? he has a family to care for. im convinced through remarks made by bill and people around him, prior to being at NU, his dreams are in the NFL. now we are back to Tom R. who was going to change the NU offense to the west coast when he was asked to coach NU in the early days of our new coach search. I have nothing against callahan, i wish him the best of luck. through rumor mills around the NFL i dont see his future in NU. i see it in cleveland. and i feel we need to be prepared for the next HC departure. understand anyone following a legend "T.O" was not going to be very good, even with the option. Tom Osborne had legendary status in a young offensive linemans home. Rathman can command respect as well. Not to make yet another redundant response to your comment about "This is why intelligent people don't mess with message boards," Nirvana, your points are taken, granted, but *where* in the world does "Tom Rathman will be the next Osborne" come from? Hey, it'd be cool if it happened, but singling out Rathman and heaping all this praise on him seems to be unmerited. Do you have inside information, or did that just come from left field?
