Game clock rule changes

I just read and maybe it is old news, but back in may the rules committee changed how the game clock is ran after first downs and kickoffs.

1) The clock will start after a first down when the ball ready signal is given instead of at the snap of the ball.

2) The clock will start when the ball is kicked not when the receiving team touches it.

The idea was to shorten the game I guess. I think it makes no sense to make these changes. What are your thoughts.

The article also said something about shortening halftime but didn't say to how long.

They also lowered the kicking tee to cut down on touchbacks. I see no problem with a 3 hour game, just more time you get to sit in Memorial Stadium :thumbs

I don't think this wil take that much time off the games. If they really want to cut down the time, then stop having such long t.v timeouts.

Exactly.

They also mentioned that it was only a temporary thing. They could change the rules back if they did not go over well. It will be interesting to see how many games are affected by these rules.

I hope they change it back. I think the question was asked on this board that what if a kickoff goes through the end zone a the end of the game. Would the clock run out? They better figure all this out by the season, or just abolish it. I don't mind long games. It's just more time to watch the Huskers!

The rule is pretty bogus. If they are going to enforce this efficiently, they will need to have people on every sideline to determine exactly how much time is left when the ball goes out of bounds or through the endzone.

The refs are already on the sidelines and endzone for kickoffs. I don't see that as such a big deal as some people are making it. It just means that offenses have to be more efficient with the ball and a little more strategy comes into play when kicking off under a minute at either the end of a half or game.

well, no doubt we will be greatful and unhappy concerning this change....i think it favors no one playing the game.......strictly driven by TV revnue and game schedules to make it all fit, including commercials for game broadcast.....it is no longer so much about the game, it is all about revenue producing commercials and broadcasting time......

Personally I don't see the point of trying to shorten a game. If it aint broke, don't fix it. Presumably the game itself has been as long as it is now for the past 20 years. One could argue that an increase of passing has slowed the game down some, but I wouldn't call it significant.

I really don't see how taking 15 plays off the game is going to appreciably shorten it anyhow. Assuming the inclusion of incompletions, time outs, a couple of punts and first downs, its not ureasonable to say that at most the time taken off would be 15 minutes (roughly a minute per play seems like a large overestimation). Taking 15 minutes out of 3 1/2 hours and you're reducing game time by a whopping 7.14%. Now taking two series out of a game could really change things. Fewer plays, fewer breaks, less time to get worn down, etc.

All in all I think the whole idea is pointless. I believe it was Tuberville (Auburn) who said it was done to shorten the amount of time players and fans may have to spend in extreme heat and/or cold. Give me a break, every coach in America is subjecting his players to extreme heat right now. Again, who really thinks 15 minutes is going to make a difference?

Whoever says its about "shortening the length of the game" is full of it. Since it makes no sense otherwise, it must be about commercials and money. Pretty gay if you ask me. But it is the NCAA we're talking about. I can't say I'm surprised.

I hate that they are shortening games. All year I look forward to football, and now they want to shorten the games? Common. If you think the games are too long, don't go or don't watch. Give the tix to fans who want to support their team. Wether it's 3 hours of 6 hours, I will watch every minute of Husker football this season.

the rule on the first down is already like this..as soon as the ref sets the ball he gives the start clock signal so this isn't a new rule
