Grantland: Ranking College Football’s New Head Coaching Hires

Well...C+ does technically mean just a bit above average...if average at NU is 9 wins...it is safe to say that Riley will be at 10 wins.

Hey guys, just wanted to drop by and remind everyone we almost lost to McNeese State in September. Life could be worse.

I don't understand their rankings. How could a coordinator with no HC experience rank higher than an actual HC with tons of experience. So the article would state that if Nebraska would of hired Pat Narduzzi we would of ranked 3rd for splash hires?? Lol... I would easily take an HC with experience before a coordinator.

From the opening paragraphs, it appears they are using some sort of sliding scale of measure, where its easier to rate higher if your school has no expectations, and the new guy looks like he might be able to keep your school around 6-6. And because we fired a 9-3 guy, there is no pleasing us, so we have to rank low.

Nebraska

Out With the Old … Bo Pelini

In With the New … Mike Riley

He Got the Job Because … he’s the anti-Bo. The Huskers were looking for a proven head coach who could rebuild a bridge to the fans and the community, which had been occasionally instigated by Pelini. Riley will be very well received in Lincoln, and his penchant for locating and coaching up gems while at Oregon State will be especially beneficial at a school like Nebraska.

There’s cause for concern because … Riley hardly seems like the right guy to elevate Nebraska, which is what this is all about, right? At 61, he’s basically starting over in a region of the country that’s unfamiliar. And it’s not as if he’d been peaking with the Beavers, going just 29-33 in the first half of this decade, including hideous losses to Sacramento State and Eastern Washington of the FCS.

In 2018, this hire will be graded … B-

Yeah but these rankings mean nothing bc he now has a handpicked assistant staff from coaches all over the country that have previously coached at Oregon state.

If MR can beat a top 10 team inside of two years, he will be an improvement since 2001.

That said, I don't care if we have the "nicest" coach on the plant, I want a respectable/ethical coach who wins games.
Bo has done this twice. Just so you know.
Not in the first two years he didn't. And Mizzou 2010 was his high water mark.
This is true. MR's high water mark is also several years in the past.

Polo pointed out my error. I couldnt respond at the time. My bad. I ignored the "first two years" part. I get a little ansy in pointing out generalizations of things like that, that we didnt have any good wins at all under Pelini. Even though Missouri was just a flash in the pants top ten team.

Just one other thing to think about, since 2008 MR's been 7-23 against top 25 opponents...
It's over. We're doomed.

I say don't even let him coach a game here at Nebraska. It's already clear he's not going to do well. We literally have all the evidence we need to see that he will not be successful at Nebraska. It is not even up for debate.

You take a mans past, and apply it to his future. That's only logical. The experiences gained, knowledge and wisdom earned count for nothing.

In this world it is put up, or shut up.

It's become clear that at Nebraska, he doesn't have what it takes.

I've seen enough. If you can't win National Championships or Conference Championships at Oregon State, then you won't at Nebraska. That's a fact.

I don't care that Oregon and USC have been legitimate top five or top ten teams in the country much of Riley's career at Oregon St. Oregon St. has every resource and ability to compete with Oregon and USC. Just look at their history, tradition, big time fan base, never ending booster support, and gigantic trophy case. Beaver football is a college football powerhouse that any average coach should have been able to maintain.

I hope Eichorst regrets every living minute of this hire. It's not about being a Nebraska fan and supporting the positivity and experience the new guy brings. I'd much rather loathe in the negative and piss poor defeatist, blame-all attitude that the last coach brought.

I'll whine and cry until Bo Pelini is brought back for a second tour of duty in his us against the world campaign.

Forever A Boliever, Nebraska football didn't exist before him, and it won't ever be the same without him.

I'm off to cry in my c$%k shaped pillow.

Signed,

Butt hurt Boliever.

not butthurt, we hired a nicer version of Bo...

Bo was on his way out, we just could have done better...
