Here's What Happened - Colorado

Huskers ball, 13:01 2nd Quarter

1&10,-48 - Tough run by Oz.  Fights off a tackle and the line and drives for 7

2&3,+45 - Inside zone to Oz.  Not much hole but he gets help from three OLs to fight forward for 7

1&10,+38 - Good protection, Martinez has time but can't find anyone.  Finally scrambles and makes a nice move to get 7

2&3,+31 - Inside zone to Oz.  No hole, needed Conrad to scoop to ILB. Gain of 4

1&10,+27 - Delay to Oz with Jaimes and Stoll leading.  Jaimes doesn't get much of a block, not sure there was much more there anyway

2&10,+27 - Play-action, Farniok whiffs but Martinez escapes, makes a great throw rolling hard left and Morgan makes a great diving catch

1&G,+8 - Off-tackle zone to Oz, Foster's blatant hold goes un-called and Oz scores

Tied at 14 with 10:15 to play in the half

 
Colorado ball, 10:15 2nd Quarter

1&10,-25 - Diamond formation, inside zone goes nowhere.  Young blows the play up and Barry gets the tackle

2&10,-25 - Flea-flicker, Jackson is toasted by the sluggo - he's 12 yards behind the reciever - but Bootle saves him playing center field - should have been a pick.  If Bootle's guy runs a route, this is a TD. Incomplete

3&10,-25 - Great look from Chinander - looks like we're bringing six but only four rush.  Stille uses the confusion to get the sack

4&18,-17 - Punt

Three straight 3-and-Outs for Colorado who are 0-4 on 3rd down so far

1&10,-46 - Outside zone to Washington.  Looks like a more decisive cut may have gotten a lot more yards but he gets tripped up for 4

2&6,50 - Same all-curls routes that Martinez throws a pick on later.  Looks short-side first this time too, checks backside but misses an open Spielman under pressure

3&6,50 - Martinez too far in front of a well-covered Morgan on the slant but Colorado called for holding.  We may have gotten a gift here

1&10,+40 - Martinez checks to Washington on the quick flat route but the pass is behind him.  Gain of 2 - probably wasn't going much farther even with a good pass

2&8,+38 - QB draw after Washington motions out.  Nice move by Martinez to get 3

3&5,+35 - Outside zone to Washington.  Safety comes unblocked, Washington spins away but only gets 3

4&2,+32 - Off-tackle zone to Oz.  If Foster and Farniok block ILB and DE instead of OLB and DE, Oz has all kinds of room.  Instead the unblocked ILB stuffs Oz in the hole.

 
Colorado ball, 7:05 2nd Quarter

1&10,-33 - Shuffle pass to Shenault on Jet motion.  We are slow reacting to it but recover to hold him to 5

2&5,-38 - Outside zone is blown up by Freedom.  Young and Barry corral him for a 6 yard loss

3&11,-32 - This time we show six and bring six. Freedom gets the sack despite holding on Colorado

4&16,-27 - Punt.  I thought Lindsey looked kind of slow here but the defender was already at full sprint when Lindsey caught it

Four straight 3-and-Outs.  That's great defense.

1&10,-21 - Outside zone to Spielman after motioning into the backfield.  If Bell gets a better lead block there should be a little more here but it goes for 4

2&6,-25 - Overloaded set, inside zone to Bell that breaks for 45.  #1 runs him down but was only a step behind him at 10 yards

1&10,+30 - Martinez checks down to Oz on the flare route but the pass is high and the coverage is good.  No gain

2&10,+30 - Inside zone to Oz but Jaimes loses his block on the backside ILB scrapes to stop him at 5

3&5,+25 - Inside zone to Oz.  Pretty good feet to slide around a couple guys and pick up 5

1&10,+20 - Half-roll left for Martinez.  Pressure forces an off-balance thrown but Reimers makes a great diving catch.

1&G,+6 - Inside one to Oz.  Farniok doesn't hold his block forcing Oz backside where he fights for 3

2&G,+3 - Fake inside zone to Oz, Martinez walks in around right end

1&10,-25 - We seem pretty confused pre-snap and no one picks up the RB in the flat.  Gain of 9

2&1,-34 - Gifford is slow getting to flat coverage and Shenault gets 13 on a quick out from the Slot

1&10,-47 - Montez wants no part of the keep on the zone read with Honas waiting even with Ferguson right on the RB.  Loss of 3

2&13,-44 - This play was all screwed up as both the WR and Slot were looking for the screen.  Had Jackson been looking for the ball it would have been a Pick 6. Incomplete

3&13,-44 - Perfect call for Colorado - WR screen against a blitz.  Goes for 14

1&10,+42 - Basically a counter trey the Gifford blows up and Young/Jackson clean up.  Gain of 1

2&9,+41 - Pressure from Gifford but Montez steps up, makes Honas miss and scrambles for 16

1&10,+25 - Good protection for the Buffs but Montez forces the post despite double coverage.  Incomplete

2&10,+25 - Another WR screen against a blitz but we hold it to 2 this time

3&8,+23 - Colorado picks up the blitz but DWilliams makes a great break up in the end zone

4&8,+23 - Field Goal

Huskers lead 21-17.  We really didn't play bad defense here.  Other than the confusion on the first play Colorado just made some nice calls/plays.

1&10,+24 - Inside zone to Washington.  If he trusts the block a little more, there may have been a gap up the middle.  Instead the triple spin move goes nowhere.

2&7,-44 - Zone read, Stille forces the give but there's not much help.  Seems like we got caught over-reacting to the quick, wide passes earlier.  Gain of 9

1&10,+47 - Inside zone, Barry blitzes and Young fills hard but they both run by the back.  Gain of 4

2&6,+43 - Both Ferguson and Young come untouched but can't get Montez down.  They do make him step up and Freedom gets the sack

3&7,+44 - Deep out to the slot, Ferguson too far inside to help underneath and Reed too deep.  Wide open.  Gain of  12

1&10,+32 - Inside zone, DL held ground well, Barry side-steps block to make the tackle.  Gain of 2

1&10,-20 - A disaster that was nearly a catastrophe.  OL cuts so ball has to come out fast but we have trips to the boundary so there is a lot of traffic and Martinez hold the ball until pressure gets there.  He is sacked which is great for us because he tried to throw it away at the last second but his knee was down nullifying the pick six.

2&16,-14 - Oz on the wide RB screen (WRs blocking) with a quick burst and a nice move to get the first down.  Gain of 17

1&10,-31 - QB draw with a Wrap block.  Gain of 6

2&5,-36 - All curls and Martinez find Williams to the boundary.  Gain of 7

1&10,-43 - Delay give to Oz, Jaimes doesn't get much of a block  and there's no hole.  Oz does well to get back to the LOS

2&10,-43 - Great protection and Martinez drops a dime to JD over double coverage.  TD

Based on nothing but general post loss disappointment, I felt like Spielman didn't have the most consistent day but looking at the first half, he was pretty decent.  Maybe that's what's coming in the 4th or was I just wrong?
