Here's What Happened - Colorado

Colorado ball, 5:35 3rd Quarter

1&10,-25 - Great stunt call with Gifford/Khalil allows Khalil to get the sack

2&19,-14 - Colorado throws the quick slant, Honas gets away with a hold, Montez almost throws it to AWilliams

3&19,-14 - Khalil gets pressure on a three-man rush but Montez steps up and buys enough time to find a receiver down the sideline for 22.  No idea what Lamar Jackson was doing.

1&10,-36 - Jet motion, quick flip.  AWilliams is late rotating up but Bootle saves the play by blowing up the block and forcing the receiver out of bounds.  Ferguson lucky to avoid a late hit.

2&9,-37 - Stolt and Carlos get late pressure but Montez find Shenault on the deep curl for a 20 yard gain.

1&10,+43 - Inside zone, Honas comes free but can't quite turn the corner in time.  Stolt throws the block aside and devours the RB for no gain

2&10,+43 - Lots of time for Montez but he can't find anyone and finally has to throw it away

3&10,+43 - False start

3&15,+48 - Shenault on the fade.  Bootle probably could have slowed him at the line but had great coverage.  Great diving catch.  Neal comes over late.

1&10,+11 - Inside zone with nowhere to go.  Gifford almost gets a TFL but overruns.  No gain

2&10,+11 - Inside zone, Freedom with a nice play to get off the block and make the tackle.  Gain of 3

3&7,+8 - Neal is late following the Jet motion, gets stuck in traffic and his guy catches it in the flat for a TD

28-27 Huskers

This drive hurt.  They covert 3rd & 19 (terrible coverage), 3rd & 15 (great coverage) and 3rd & 8 inside the 10.

I thought JD had a pretty good game.  Just the one ball that he dropped but it was a big one.

 
Huskers ball, 1:24 3rd Quarter

1&10,-25 - Delay of game

1&15,-20 - Middle screen to Washington.  Gain of 14. Maybe more yards than we've had on screens the last three years

2&1,-34 - Inside zone to Washington.  Regular cut, jump cut, finally the 4th & 5th Buff get him to the ground.  Gain of 10

1&10,-44 - Triple option pitch to Lindsay.  Farniok whiffs but Lindsay probably out-runs that guy if Morgan doesn't whiff as well. No gain. Dang I want to see this play blocked decent

2&10,-44 - Martinez looks, gets pressure and takes off.  He's 15 yards downfield in a flash, fakes a slide then gets 10 more

1&10,+31 - Play-action, Martinez with a great, savvy throw to put air under it and let Morgan run under it.  But he boots it.  JD almost catches the carom the Colorado has a chance at the pick off the deflection

2&10,+31 - Inside zone to Washington.  He probably could have gotten 4-5 inside but bounces it outside and gets about the same.  Had it been to the field side it would have been big

3&5,+26 - Martinez has protection but gets a bit of happy feet, rolls right and shorts the throw to a wide-open JD.  This really hurts in a minute.

4&5,+26 - Missed 44 yard attempt.  Supposedly he his plant foot was too far forward.  Didn't sound like solid contact.

The last 3rd down really hurt.  Martinez didn't have to scramble and probably would have thrown a better pass from the pocket.  JD was wide open, at least had a first down and might have scored if he gets the ball.  Then we miss the FG.  Ouch.

1&10,-26 - Jet motion, quick flip to Shenault.  Bootle was unblocked but runs right into Ferguson getting blocked.  Good for 7

2&3,-33 - False start

2&8,-28 - Jackson playing too soft on the deep out and they complete it for 10 yards

1&10,-38 - Great blitz call for Barry blows up the Inside zone.  Gain of 2

2&8,-40 - Safety blitz from AWilliams forces a quick throw. Just overthrown.  Bootle had good coverage

3&8,-40 - Another great stunt call gets Ferguson free but he whiffs on Montez who scrambles for 6

4&2,-46 - Wildcat to Sheault who gets just enough.  Barry and Reed were play-side but were too quick to chase the counter-step which made them late getting back.  Dang.

1&10,-48 - Play-action, Jackson is WAY too soft on the curl then he and AWilliams whiff coming back.  Gain of 11

2&10,+41 - Inside zone. Gifford way to aggressive trying to wrong-shoulder and they get 10

1&10,+31 - Inside zone.  Barry and Young should have been able to stop this for a short gain but both were wide by a step and it goes for 12

1&10,+19 - Inside zone.  Newell and Gifford blow up the play and Young gets the TFL

2&11,+20 - Barry gets quick pressure and forces the throw-away

3&11,+20 - We show blitz but only bring three.  Carlos - who should have been flagged for offsides - gets pressure and forces the bad throw

4&11,+20 - 38 yard FG hooks left, no good

Kind of an ugly series.  Could have stopped them a couple times but several not good plays from the Blackshirts.  Luckily they stood up when they needed to.

 
Mav, could you list the time it took on our scoring drives off the clock? Curious what our TOP was on those. I saw the overall was almost identical with Colorado, but wondering how long it took us to score.

 
I couldn't really remember why our offense didn't seem to do as much in the second half.  Now I'm seeing it - there just weren't many possessions.  We had a couple long drives. Colorado had a couple long drives.  Just not a lot of chances to go around.

1&10,-20 - QB draw with Wrap.  Gain of 5

2&5,-25 - Inside zone to Bell.  Not much room.  Gain of 3

3&2,-28 - Inside zone to Bell.  If he attacks the hole harder he probably has another long run but #1 is there again.  Gain of 21

1&10,-49 - Motion JD out of the backfield and throw him the WR screen.  For some reason MWilliams tries to block Morgan's guy and the unblocked corner sticks JD

2&9,50 - Triple option to JD but the timing is messed up and JD fumbles the pitch.  Wasn't going anywhere anyway

3&12,-47 - Martinez gets pressure and scrambles.  Had he kept his foot on the gas he gets the first down but he starts to make a move and gets caught a yard short

4&1,+42 - Inside zone to Bell but both ILBs shoot the gap and Bell loses a yard

Not a pretty set of plays.  Martinez needs to get to the sticks.

1&10,-43 - Jet motion, quick flip to Shenault. For some reason several guys are really slow reacting to it.  Gain of 7

2&3,50 - Inside zone, not much room.  Gain of 2

3&1,+48 - Inside zone, good penetration by the DL and there is nowhere to go

4&1,+48 - Option.  Gifford forces a quick pitch and Young runs the RB out of bounds. Loss of 2

Great series for the Blackshirts. There was no defender farther than five yards off the LOS at the snap on 4th down

1&10,50 - All curls.  Martinez pulls an Armstrong.  He locks in on AWilliams and is way late with the throw.  Washington is wide open on the outside.  INT

1&10,+32 - Counter trey look, ILBs fill fast but miss.  Carlos drags him down after 3

2&7,+29 - Off tackle zone, not much room.  Gain of 2

3&5,+26 - Montez gets a little happy feet and misses an open receiver in the flat.  Would have been a first down and more.

4&5,+26 - Missed 43 yard FG

Blackshirts caught a break on 3rd down but that's still a consecutive 4-and-out and a 3-and-Out in crunch time, the second one after a turnover.

1&10,-26 - Inside zone to Oz. Gain of 7.  Clock-killing mode

2&3,-33 - Defensive delay of game

1&10,-38 - Inside zone to Oz.  Not a lot of room but could have been more decisive.  Gain of 5

2&5,-43 - Defensive offsides

1&10,-48 - Sprint option right, Martinez keeps, goes nowhere and gets hurt.  Also a holding penalty.

1&20,-38 - Inside zone to Oz.  Gain of 2

2&17,-41 - QB draw, too many guys play-side to block.  Gain of 1

3&16,-42 - Looks like it's a planned delayed roll right by Bunch who puts it on the money to JD but he drops it

4&16,-42 - Punt

The play where Martinez got hurt is probably a bad choice all the way around.  Oz isn't the best choice to run wide and Martinez should have pitched.  I wonder if he didn't pitch because it was Oz.

1&10,-23 - Deep curl to Shenault.  Bootle too soft on the coverage. Gain of 15

1&10,-38 - Quick out to the slot.  Gain of 4

2&6,-42 - Incomplete on the deep out.  Montez might have intentionally thrown it away

3&6,-42 - Quick slant in front of Taylor good for 17.  Taylor has to force him outside there

1&10,+41 - Play-action doesn't fool Carlos who forces the throw-away

2&10,+41 - Stille abuses the center and gets the sack

3&19,50 - False start

3&24,-45 - Overthrown down the middle.  Personal foul for the hit.  Could have been an INT.  Worst part is it was still 13 yards short of the first down so even if he catches it it's 4th & long.  Also, the Back Judge looking right at it didn't throw a flag.  It came from the sideline.

1&10,+40 - Shenault on the fade for the TD.  Good coverage just a great pass and catch.  AWilliams could have helped quicker.

2-PT - Quick pressure from Gifford on the roll-out and DWilliams sticks the receiver immediately

Colorado up 33-28 with 1:06 to play

 
Nebraska ball, 1:03 4th Quarter

1&10,-36 - Bunch finds MWilliams on the curl, Williams fights for 14

1&10,50 - Foster doesn't pick up the blitzing ILB and Bunch has to throw it away

2&10,50 - Bunch on the short roll finds Stoll for a short gain

3&6,+44 - Bunch buys time and finds Morgan for 23

1&10,+21 - False start on Jaimes; Final timeout

1&15,+26 - Flare pass to Bell. Gain of 5

2&10,+21 - Corner route to Morgan. Bunch throws it late and out of bounds

3&10,+21 - Bunch overthrows MWilliams on the curl

4&10,+21 - Corner route to Morgan.  Bunch throws it out of bounds facing heavy pressure

Ballgame

We did so many things well.  But a few plays made a huge difference.
