From what I understand the option was out of date in the 1950s. As a philosophy I don't understand why it wouldn't work. It's basically an indefensible play. It might not work every time, but if you've got strength and speed at the QB, RB, and FB positions, what's to stop you?

um...i think you understand wrong. in the 50's the big offense that came about was the Houston Veer. had all of 6 plays in it if i remember right. Anyways, the whole offense was a triple opition(hand to the play side back, run the ball and pitch it, or throw the ball after you run a bit.) which then got turned into the i formation triple opition that nebraska used. and it may be "dead" but they said that in 95 feista bowl, remind me how many points got put up there again please. or what about the 83 team?
