Husker Prayer: Stride, Stripes or Strife?

Stride or Stripes, which is correct?

On the ribbon board in the stadium this last Saturday during the Southern Miss game they put the words of the prayer up and they used stride.

Whatever is historically correct for Nebraska, I have no idea. But speaking purely from a rhyming scheme perspective, strife is the one that makes the most sense.

Below is the version of the Husker prayer that I think is correct. I used to say "stride". But I think it was Redux (??) who convinced me that "stripes" is correct. I've heard it both ways. In fact, in the two YouTubes below you hear the players say it both ways.

Dear Lord, the battles we go through in life,
We ask for a chance that's fair
A chance to equal our stripes,
A chance to do or dare

If we should win, let it be by the code,
Faith and Honor held high

If we should lose, we'll stand by the road,
And cheer as the winners go by

Day by Day, we get better and better!
Til' we can't be beat...
WON'T BE BEAT!

btw, "Stripes" is a reference to the whipping marks left on Jesus' back. LINK
Didn't "'Til we can't be beat..." used to be: "A team that can't be beat..." (As in: "A team that can't be beat... won't be beat").

That's how I always understood it.

Was just going to say this. This is the correct way imo.

I've seen good cases for all 3. My personal preference is stride as it makes the most sense to me. Although, since NUance's post above about what stripes refers to, I kind of like that version. I have seen various players claim the correct version is any of the 3. It's almost as if nobody knows what the true, original version is supposed to be.

Prayer of a Sportsman

Dear Lord, in the battle that goes on through life
I ask but a field that is fair,
A chance that is equal with all in the strife,
A courage to strive and to dare;

And if should win, let it be by the code
With my faith and my honor held high;
And if I should lose, let me stand by the road,
And cheer as the winners go by.

And Lord, may my shouts be ungrudging and clear,
A tribute that comes from the heart,
And let me not cherish a snarl or a sneer
Or play any sniveling part;

Let me say, "There they ride, on whom laurel's bestowed
Since they played the game better than I."
Let me stand with a smile by the side of the road,
And cheer as the winners go by.

So grant me to conquer, if conquer I can,
By proving my worth in the fray,
But teach me to lose like a regular man,
And not like a craven, I pray;

Let me take off my hat to the warriors who strode
To victory splendid and high,
Yea, teach me to stand by the side of the road
And cheer as the winners go by.

You all are correct.

"A team that can't be beat, won't be beat!"

Man, I miss those days.

Post 2001 Frank guided the team into its new reality "might be pounded occasionally". The prayer was modified accordingly.

"Hit or miss"...a powerful season slogan was ingeniously conceived (with a hidden double meaning to encourage Jamal to keep throwing although the comp% was expected to be terrible (and it was)

All whites for away games, too. Players felt they would be sweet (record with was terrible)

strife is the original word used but stride is what I hear most commonly used. I have never heard stripe and don't even understand how that would fit.
