Is there a certain record you need to see next year or...

A year ago, we were looking back at a coach who under-achieved his way to 9 wins every year. Now we have a thread full of folks who will be happy with 8-4 or 7-5 as a sign of progress.

Hang tough, those of you who still have actual standards.
Don't forget that the AD kicked out a 10-3 coach for gravitating toward mediocrity. At the time I didn't realize the goal was to hall butt to mediocrity.

8 wins. I think 8+ wins tells us we are heading in the right direction. Doesn't mean I think it's a great season but it's another step in the right direction. Liked what I saw in the last 4 games sans the turnovers.

Assuming there aren't huge injury issues anything less would be a disappointment.

To me, 8 wins doesn't mean I'm satisfied. It means we didn't make a massive mistake in the hire, and nothing more.

Progress deserves a larger sample size, and context will determine my mood.

I would have accepted last season's Purdue loss knowing it came with a Michigan State upset. But I wouldn't like knowing it came with six other losses. But honestly, if Nebraska completes that incredible road comeback against Miami, and hangs on for that home win against Wisconsin --- both which could/should have happened -- that would have been a memorable 8-5 season. Even with the BYU Hail Mary and Illinois Brain Fart.

8 wins would count as progress next season if the same team gets control over turnovers, penalties and big plays handed to opponents. Then you'd have to wait for a third season, as the coach begins working more with the players he recruited.

If Tommy Armstrong has indeed reached his ceiling and buckles under the pressure, and if no back-up QB is ready or better, it could be another frustrating season.

I can see scenarios for a great season, a growing season and a frustrating season. Wouldn't bet on any one of them. Just have to wait for the games to be played.

I know we won't have any losses against teams we should never lose to, because we got like 5 years worth of those out of the way last season.

I'm with you. I can live with 8, would feel pretty OK about 9- but only if we were pretty consistently winning 10 after that.

OK if you are one of the guys who really follows college football, and you know you know your SH$&, what is your real unadultorated, non-koolaid drinking prognostication for Nebraska's football record this year.

If I had to put a number on it as of now, I'd go with 8 wins. Losses to Oregon, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and someone else we should handle.

8-4 would be disappointing to me even with a tough road schedule (very easy B10 home schedule). We have to go 9-3 to make it seem we took a good step forward IMO
Considering we lost to Illinois and Pur-f******-due, is it really prudent to put them in the "Gimmies" column? And I'd especially watch out for Illinois--Lovie is likely to do for them what Kill did for Minnesota, though I don't know if he'll be able to do it almost overnight like Kill did.

And 9-3 is our gold standard--don't see why we should abandon it. The games I'm worried about are Oregon, Ohio State, and Indiana...but frankly, until Riley shows on the field that he's learned his lesson re: offensive playcalling and our defense shows that it has improved...I'm going to worry about every game on that slate.

I'm legitimately curious, and not trying to be a jacka$$, but why do you consider two teams we lost to last year as "gimmies"? Because they were away last year and home this year? It just seems like a big jump from loss to "gimmie".
As bad as last year was, those were super weird losses. if we played each of those games ten times, I wouldn't be surprised to see NU win at least 8 each.
