Let me first say that I live in FL and that I am an alum of U of Miami. However, I wanted to let you know what type of player you have in Steve Allen. I had the opportunity to watch him play throughout his high school career at Atlantic HS in Delray Beach, FL. And let me tell you, he is a helluva player. He may have been the best player on the team and that says alot given that he was playing with:

Omar Jacobs (Bowling Green QB), Brandon Owens (SS for U of Minnnesota), David Clowney (WR for Virginia Tech), Brandon Flowers (CB, Virginia Tech), Jamal Harris (CB, University of Minnesota), to name just some of the team that went on to D1 programs. Steve just had a nose for the ball and was always around to make the big play. He was the heart and soul of that defense, and they were a phenomenal team here in S. florida. The only thing that kept him from going straight to a big D1 program were his grades. I think he could be the sleeper of your recruiting class.

1) What are your first impressions of this recruit (speed, strength, character, leadership, grades, etc)? Outstanding leadership, quick to the ball, able to get to ball carrier regardless of blocking scheme.

2) Rank his importance to the Huskers 1-10 (10 the most important).

2-3. He may be the starter this year, and could be the focal pt of the defense by year 2.

3) Will he contribute right away? In what capacity? Given his abilities and that he is a JUCO transfer, he may compete for a starting position this year. Next year, he will not only start, but will excel (barring injury)

4) Who does this player most remind you of?

Jonathon Vilma. Vilma was also unheralded and not really heard of compared to the big recruits Miami was signing. But he had a knack for getting to the ball and was the heart and soul of the defense.

5) Where do you see this player in 2010?

NFL linebacker, barring injury

Thanks for the first hand info. I hope your assessment (sp?) is accurate. Vilma is definitely one of my favorite alumns from the U. I would be happy with half of that kind of production.

Sounds good. I see Allen, Octavian and McKweon being our leaders next year. These are the players we have been missing.

along with bradley and ruud with the Lb crew right? my our Lb unit looks scary next year! :thumbs

I don't see Dillard or Ruud being 1st string at the beginning of the season. I'm not sure there is going to be a better middle linebacker in the league next year than McKweon

 
Steve Allen will not be attending the University of Nebraska. Rivals reports that Allen is not eligible. The reason, according to Rivals, is that he attended one too many JUCOS before signing with a D-1 school. He started at a Kansas JUCO and then went out to Fresno. He will be finishing his playing career out in West Texas at a DII school, according to teammate Andre Jones.

 
I read that article and it left me scratching my head.

The NCAA has some head-scratchers as far as rules go, this ranks right up there with some of the best. Too many JUCO's makes him D1A ineligible? WOW!

 
Yes, the NCAA does have some screwy rules, but shouldn't someone on the staff have a very good grasp of the recruiting rules. Whether it be an assistant coach, recruiting coordinater, manager, trainer, water boy, someone should know the rules. I just wish they wouldn't waste their time recruiting players that aren't eligible to play D1. Right now it looks like it won't be a big loss, but if we have another season like last year where three LB's go down, it could turn out to be a big loss.

 
did the coaches even know that he attended the other school?

the university has to have some one on staff that does nothing but make sure that the university is in compliance with the ncaa rules. i am not sure who that person is but i think he/she is in the athletic department not just the football team.

it is hard to believe that something like this would be over looked though.

That's what I'd like to know....this falls on the assistant athletic directors a$$.
