Keller

Four-Star Recruit
Okay, I'm the first to say that I was a big Callahan supporter. That is a thing of the past, for reasons that I will detail later.

But, speaking of Keller; last night, my wife began complaining about how Keller just doesn't get rid of the football in decent time. She said that he stands around looking too long. Being the household football expert, I chastised her, telling her that there obviously were no receivers open down field, and that's why he had to dump off all of those 3,4, and 5 yard passes. And then I started thinking . . .

Why is Nebraska the only major football program that doesn't seem to have open receivers down field? Heck, every other team we play have open receivers on fairly deep patterns. We don't, at least if you watch Keller. Ball State can do it. Iowa State can do it. Wake Forest can do it. But, for some reason, NU cannot.

Is it possible that Keller is more interested in padding his completion stats than winning games for NU? How many times have you seen him dump off a 2-3 yard completion on 3rd and long? It seems to be fairly frequent.

Maybe it's time that he rode the bench. Maybe that's why Arizona sent him packing. I mean, he has good stats, and the team sucks. Is there a relationship? I, for one, would like to see Ganz or one of the young QB's have a chance. After all, they are the future. Keller is just here to prepare for the pro draft. Trust me, we certainly have nothing to lose.

But back to Callahan. Something is going on in that program, and that's for certain. Has anyone heard any rumors? This seems to be a team that is not only on the same page--they don't even seem to have seen the playbook. Is there some sabotage going on there? This team does not even meet the mediocre level, even with all of these so-called great recruting seasons. What is going on? It's a mystery.

Maybe these pro coaches don't understand that college players need forced conditioning and skill development. Pro players don't need the motivation, because they do it for money. College players are still at a level that they really need conditioning and skill development. I see poorly conditioned college athletes and a subpar level of skill development when I watch these Huskers. They seem lost and befuddled.

Yes, Callahan must go, and he ultimately will. The only question is: How low will the program sink before we can move on?

About Keller and the short dump-off . . . I suppose as a quarterback, especially in a state where the quarterback is under so much scrutiny as Nebraska, it would make far more sense to dump the ball off to a running back or tight end and let them try to bully their way to a first down than try to force a pass into coverage downfield. Especially when the little dump-offs have been the bread-and-butter of the offense in the past. How many times last season did we hear, "Taylor drops back . . . looks . . . dumps it off to Lucky/Jackson . . . Lucky/Jackson's got the first down!" I don't think it has anything to do with him padding his own stats and everything to do with him wanting to keep his part of the game under control.

Did any of that make ANY sense or am I just rambling?

I think you are going into a conspiracy theory just a little bit too much here. He is going to his checkdown guy most of the time and maybe it's really because he doesn't want to force a pass and would rather get the first down instead of the forced touchdown. I don't know???

You may be right, but--in any case--our passing strategy seems pretty ineffective. Maybe it's just the WCO, I don't know. It does seem, however, that every team that NU plays gets more bang for the buck from their QB's performances than we do from Keller, even if Keller does have better stats. Do you know what I'm saying?

:rant I love my Huskers, but this is getting down right pathetic!! :boxosoap It seems like every game we have played this year has down right been terrible!! i think its time to take out the senoir Keller!!! Or atleast try someone else like Davis or even Gains again!! :restore I understand that Keller maybe good to some :bang but when he is over throwing or even under throwing passes by 5 to 10 yds to his receivers and throwing atleast 1 interception every game, we aren't going to win games!!! :steam We need to put his starting job on the line like they have done on other teams in the NCAA and even in the NFL, it would be a start..Heck we might actually play better! dedhoarse

Keller is NOT the problem. Do you really think Ganz would be any better? It is the coaching, period. Sabatoag? Doubtful, but there is something woefully missing in the schemes and coaching. Relax, get a bigger spoon, we are going to be eating out of this sh#t sack until 2011.

Callahan teaches the QB's to do this. Not by choice, obviously, but just the point that punting IS ok. There is no point in trying to force a tough pass when you can dump it off, get quality yardage, and maybe 1/3 of the times we break some tackles and get the first down anyway. Football is a battle of field position, and you can't lose that battle and expect to win, especially with our defense.

Now, obviously, when we're losing, your gonna want to take a bit more risks than usual, but i think Kellers doing fine.

If you say so. All I know is that we nearly lost to Ball State and Iowa State, struggled against Wake Forest, and couldn't score a touchdown against one of the worst defense in the nation.

Ten-to-one that OU hangs 40+ points on Missouri next week.

But, you repeated the Conventional Wisdom, so it must be true.

Keller feels like it is up to him to win all our games

and you know what?

Lately, it is up to him.

And what I mean by that is, the coaching staff doesn't seem to be having any amazing game plans, so it is up to him, his throws, and his receivers.

---that's a lot of pressure.

It is a lot like just having to improvise, instead of really being able to follow a system.

I don't think it's Keller, I think it is a BC problem. Receivers not being open has occured with every qb under bc. Taylor held the ball for a long time and sometimes it worked, sometimes he got wallopped. You can't say the receivers aren't as talented as other teams. We have brought in "top ten talent" since bc has been here. Why don't we take shots deep? Every team we play has success at that.

The 3 yd check downs on 3rd and 10, that's an NFL thing. They do that all the time.

Keller is not a husker. He is a hired gun and is competing only for the shot at the NFL. I also noticed the short passes and thought the same thing during the game. I had high hopes when I heard he was coming here but the whole crowd, Keller, Cahahan, Coz, and Pederson have imposed themselves on a program that was a winner, used it to further their own egos and agendas, and driven it into the ground. They will all be gone within three years and we will be left with the rebuilding job of that Bob Devaney couldn't pull off.

My problem with Keller, on 3rd and long - he tends to lock in on one guy. See the pick from last night. Never looked at anyone else and telegraphed the throw all the way.

I don't see benching him yet.

Tavita Pritchard(QB) of stanford,Making his first career start against USC, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound sophomore from Tacoma, Wash., who entered the game having thrown three passes. Pritchard, filling in for T.C. Ostrander, completed 11 of 30 for 149 yards and the winning TD. The numbers weren't great, but they won 24-23.

Sam Keller, was 14 of 25 for 193 yards, 1 TD, with one interception versus Nevada.

Sam Keller was 24 for 41 for 258 yards, 1 TD, with two interceptions versus Wakeforest

Sam Keller, was 29 for 37 for 438 yards, 3 TDs, with one interception versus Ball st

Sam Keller was 18-for-28 for 219 yards, with one interception versus Iowa st.

Sam Keller, was 36-for-54 for 389 yards, 2 TDs, with two interceptions. But 169 yards and two TDs came in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach, Keller was intercepted on Nebraska's first two series of the second half, versus USC.

Sam Keller, who was 25-for-43 with 223 yards and one interception versus mizz.

Maybe we should take a page from their book and try a different QB and bench keller for a couple of games? I mean look at the stats!! 8 interceptions in 6 games all leading to scores by our opponents!! What we have to lose...we're already barely beating or losing to a medicocure teams anyways.. What you all think?

Admission time.

Sam Keller is a middle of the road Pac-10 talent that freaking ASU threw away and Nu was all too eager to give him a free two years. Because that's what NU football has become, the hyenas of recruiting on the west coast.
