Turner Gill’s pursuit of a head coaching position continues today. The former Nebraska assistant coach and standout quarterback will be interviewed a second time for the vacancy at the University of Buffalo, the Buffalo (N.Y.) News reported in today’s editions. The 43-year-old Gill, currently in his first season as director of player development and offensive assistant with the NFL Green Bay Packers, had his first interview at Buffalo last week.
After five losing seasons, Buffalo fired head coach Jim Hofher with two games remaining this season. The Bulls ended up 1-10, including 1-7 in the Mid-American Conference.
Hofher, who had one year remaining on his contract, posted an 8-49 overall mark at Buffalo. He took over a fledgling program that made the jump to NCAA Division I-A when it joined the MAC in 1999.
Gill, who worked 13 seasons as a Nebraska assistant coach, couldn’t be reached for comment Monday. If he lands the Buffalo job, he would join the same conference as former Husker head coach Frank Solich, who recently completed his first season at Ohio.
In other coaching news, former Nebraska assistant Marvin Sanders has turned down a chance to become Kansas State’s defensive coordinator. The 38-year-old Sanders received a contract extension at North Carolina, where he serves in the same capacity.
Sanders reportedly was approached by new Kansas State coach Ron Prince, who replaced longtime Wildcat mentor Bill Snyder last week.
