With the need to get down to 105 players after this year, I would expect a lot more departures after I@wa. Going forward players who don’t show an impact by year 2 will be moved on. It is harsh, but that is the new reality in managing a smaller roster. Malachi hasn’t been able to be an impact for whatever reason, can’t afford to waste a spot on him. 

This is something that everyone will need to remember when there are multiple folks that are leaving this year.  We need to lose about 40-50 players off the current roster, and there are going to be some names that no one likes to see leave, leave.  (Granted half of those should be seniors and Covid "seniors")

Where is the proof ?  If he can't beat out the stiffs playing now what makes you think he will be better in the future ?  I'm sure he will be fine playing for the jacks at South Dakota State.

I understand your point, but probably should have picked a different example, bc in this context it makes SDSU seem inferior, when in truth and reality, the Jacks would have beaten Nebraska each of the past 4 year. Right now they are a better program that has put more guys into the NFL than we have over that time, including 2 starting TE, 3 RB, starting LB, starting OL, and a QB. If HH was smart he would head to Brookings next year

Supposedly Coleman and Tommi Hill were both told to take their s#!tty attitudes elsewhere. Guess Sean Callahan said Hill will walk on Senior Day, but won't be playing the last two games. Apparently he was getting into it with Butler and calling him a b!^@h, and yeah. (Getting into it with a guy who's pretty well respected in the NFL probably ain't the greatest idea for your draft stock, but...) Might be one or two more on the way.

So yeah, add another one to our extensive list of highly rated WRs who amount to little or nothing. Dating back to the Riley era, and starting to look like a CVS receipt at this point. Tyjon Lindsey, Jaevon McQuitty, Keyshawn Jr, Darien Chase, Demariyon Houston, Omar Manning, Alante Brown, Marcus Fleming, Zavier Betts, Malachi Coleman...

I was really hoping this wouldn't be the case, but this was supposedly part of the issues with Hill at ASU. It's a shame, I really think he has quite a bit of physical talent, just can't get the attitude piece figured out.

Unfortunate that a kid with heaps of potential is heading for other opportunities. I wish him luck. 

I do remember watching his route reps in games late last year- his route running was absolutely brutally bad at times, especially as I recall, rounding cuts. Obviously his depths etc were hard to judge because you don't know, playbook-wise, where he is supposed to be in the route. He was an adept and willing blocker though.

Always sucks to lose talented guys, especially ones who have actually shown some good things in games. But I think the writing has been on the wall for a while, I was hoping the redshirt was injury related but sounds like it isn't. Only non-injury reason to redshirt him is to let him keep the year of eligibility. Hope he lands somewhere he can put it all together.

If the stuff with Hill is true, that's a frustrating relapse. Going from problem kid about to get kicked off the team to a single-digit guy was a great story, but maybe the challenges with being injured have just brought back out the worst. If you'd told me even at the end of last year that Hill would (potentially) end up in the doghouse and not contributing much I wouldn't have been surprised. Really thought he'd turned a corner throughout last year and into this year though.

It is an extensive list, but in fairness none of the bolded guys could really be called highly rated. McQuitty was a borderline 4-star, and based on his offers not a blue chip recruit. And some have worked out. The Trey Palmer year was great, Wan'Dale was a difference maker while here - but yeah, more the exception than the rule I guess. I'd just put the bolded guys in a not-highly-rated bucket, which includes the success stories of Stanley Morgan, JD Spielman, Samori Toure, etc.

Totally agree and thank you for that note on the effort. I heard similar things from LPS coaches and some parents from East back when he was a senior. 'Best player on the field if he wants to be.' Seemed to form a strong bond with Dylan in the offseason, so I wonder if the winning cures all will apply here as well. It's been a long six weeks so I'm sure that is wearing on everyone.

Also curious if Holgo's arrival and initial critiques of certain position groups indicates that some coaching staff changes are in the near future. McGuire, Thomas, and Barthel seem like good candidates for moving on or to different roles. I hope we simply reduce Satt's salary, but keep him as a tight ends coach. I am impressed with how that group has developed, though I think they have more potential ahead. Truthfully, I've felt that Satt was always the backup OC choice after Peetz passed upon the initial hiring and Holgo passed last winter. Rhule wanted people he trusted, but it always seemed like he was chasing someone else to fill the role, but wanted to ensure whoever did it was someone he trusted. Now, with Holgo here, hopefully he can bring that stability. 

I still believe Noah Walters never got enough credit for MC being a “5 Star”.

Noah was solid, but Malachi's athleticism and size were the reason for the high ratings. His on-field performance and stats weren't necessarily indicative of his ratings. I still think he's got a ton of talent, but he needs to get the attitude and work ethic to match in order to pull it all together.

I agree. The staff has to get the roster down, and if scholarship plays can't push for playing time and turn out to be head cases, they need to move on. I cheer the hardest for Nebraska kids, he has a great story and upside, but if he were that good he would've beat out our mediocre starters. Barney and Nelson seem to be doing ok. Remove the dead weight and let the hunger keep pushing these younger players to demand playing time.  Some dudes peak in high school.

Sucks for the kid.  I think one thing to remember is just how many "regular" students transfer or leave college.  And they don't have near they strict schedule that these players have, I know they also don't usually get the same help and resources, but still.  

It is a grind, I am sure.

because of the reports of him being "injured" most of the year, I wonder if he's one of those guys who is only injured when he doesn't want to do things.  Like he wants reps and wants to play but anytime there is conditioning or drills all of the sudden his hammy is tight.  

When I looked for what injury, hamstring was thrown out there. But Rhule said before game one he was not being redshirted for an injury and he was perfectly healthy just need to mature to the game after being thrown into the fire. 
 

either he was told he needed to find a new home and was not going to play in the remaining games. Or maybe he led not going to play in the final games and his effort will be monitored to see if there’s a spot for him next year. Or it’s just stupid talk.  Not sure.

Yeah no. He was going to be a very large future contributor. This is just another issue pointing that this staff isn’t going to get the job done here

OK, not defending McGuire here, but gimme a break. If you've been paying attention, Coleman has been a walking red flag since before he got on campus.
