What if his parents were in on it, but Manti didn't know? Like they were just trying to get him a ton of publicity to make money off it?

I'm pretty sure it was the other way around.

I'm sure it was too. I'm just thinking of any bizarre ways that Manti could not know she wasn't real.

Notre Dame Statement: Manti Te’o
On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

Manti's LB numbers weren't really good. All of these "journalists" who have media votes for the Heisman should be ashamed.

Before I got to it in the article I was thinking of the show Catfish. What a strange tale it almost seems like 2stories. The face to face parts are the weak spots. Internet hoax and face to face don't jive.
