Wasn't he/they one/5 of the Jackson 5?

Rap sucks. I prefer the anti-estabishmentarianism, anti-social, hate your mom and life type music like Disturbed, Godsmack, Tool and Five Finger Death Punch.
And Slipnot, Korn, Linkin Park... :woo

Guess I'm too old to recognize Five Finger Death Punch.

But then today in my car, I've been listening to Boz Scaggs do Big Band hits like "What's New"

EWWWW!!! Are you kidding me??? Anyone who listens to Godsmack, Disturbed, Linkin Park, or Slipnot has NO right to criticize even the worst rap has to offer. Egads, if you threw Creed and Smashmouth onto that list you'd be laying out a who's who of the worst bands of all time.

edit: No beef with Tool though, Maynard has laid out some of the purest rock America has seen in the past 20 years.

I usually don't pay much attention to genres..Just try to avoid ©RAP and most Country...But if it's a good enough song, it will work in all genres..I'm even a closet Marilyn Manson fan..Any thing with a great bass line..(Or is it because he looks a little like my 1st real girlfriend after she discovered gobs of makeup?) <_<

I guess I'll never understand why more people don't like Slipnot..I'm 47, but they're probably my Favourite band since "Alice in Chains" or Soundgarden/whatever band Chris Cornell is in.

Though..Last week I was listening to Live Pink Floyd "The Wall in Japan"..

Right now, I'm funkin' to

Rap is so generic...just diff wurds to one of 7 different monotonous beats.

THanks for the Tool reference..I didn't think I was that familiar with them until I just looked it up on YTube.

"Parabola" is much more impressive than what I thought they sounded like.

I've been using Linkin Park to help my 6-yr old read faster (reading the lyrics in a window next to the song playing on youtube.

His Fav. group lately, almost sorta growing on me...Sorta like My Dad and me compromising on Benny Goodman and Chicago back in the late '70s, so we could ride in the same car.

You've just got to make an attempt to listen to rap that's an inch or two beneath the ultra pop surface. Check out Deltron 3030, MF Doom, the GZA, Mos Def, or even a little Outkast, you'll find a lot more variance between the beats in their songs than you'll find between Godsmack and Linkin Park. Lyrics are about 20x as provocative and clever, too.

Or, if all else fails, just give some classic Tupac an honest listen. That man was the Emerson of lyricists.

All of that said, I'm not a "rap guy". I'll stand up for most any kind of music (even 80's hair metal and cheesy Nashville pop country), the only exception being late 90's early 00's rap/rock groups (Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit) and the army of miserably poor pop rock bands that came out around that same time (Godsmack, Creed, Smashmouth, etc).
