Matt Rhule to stay at Nebraska

I think that's fine, but that record was during the pre-NIL era. Success today has as much to do with collectives as it does the ability of a coach to manage games on Saturdays, which Rhule isn't very good at.

I think this is about as doable as an extension should be for a coach that hasn't earned one. I do think Nebraska is in for a painful month of football, so we'll see how this ages by December.

Coaching contracts are about optics and stability as much as they are about results. That's just how the modern college football ecosystem works.

Recruiting and staff retention all hinge on long term stability and buy-in from fans/boosters. If you don't extend a coach during critical times like these, you're sending the opposite message that you might not see him as the long term answer. And then what happens next? Opposing coaches use that against them on the recruiting trail every day.

Rhule's value isn't just about a record but what people think he's building and the culture he's established, plus his past evidence of turning programs around. Locking him in isn't a panic move IMO but a strategic signal that they're all in on the guy. And honestly, the fact they're doing this before the "difficult stretch" of the schedule just kind of reinforces that point - they're not scoreboard watching in the moment but trying to signal confidence in the direction and not just the destination.

I totally get why the record doesn't necessarily make it feel like the sexiest move but hyper-focusing on that element of it sort of misunderstands what's actually happening and why.
I get this argument, but I think its largely true in the old, pre-NIL era of the sport. Recruits used to value long-term stability because transferring was difficult. Now they mostly go to the places that offer them the most money with the most playing time. That doesn't mean stability doesn't play a role, but doesn't mean nearly as much as it used to. If you pay players large sums of money, they'll come regardless of the stability of the coach.

The same is true for assistant coaches, Tony White didn't go to FSU for the stability. He left because they offered him a lot of money and he miscalculated his ability to coach.

Nebraska got this done today because they have a massive recruiting weekend, and pitching stability is an important piece, but also because doing it next Sunday is extremely likely to be met with doubt after a very likely loss to USC.

I don’t like the timing of this. If we get drubbed by USC (likely IMO) then we have egg all over our face. That being said we are in weird predicament. Coaches are a hot commodity and have lots of leverage. Win or lose on Saturday at least this says we are riding with Rhule and he can give certainty to recruits and transfer players. If we were really smart we’d go raid PSU, FL, LSU, Ole Miss, Okie Lite, and more. We can provide certainty while all these other teams are in uncertain stormy seas.

This fan base complains that he might leave, they complain that he doesn't make a statement saying he is staying, then they complain that he got an extension, then they complain.....

It is like dealing with a bunch of middle schoolers!
everybody loves raymond my posts GIF

...but Kelly will use a workaround by funneling his donation through the Tiger Athletic Foundation, a booster group that financially supports LSU athletics.

It's kind of odd though technically, right? Because Brian Kelly's guaranteed amount at time of firing was like $54M. Why even try to make the team better...your personal situation is pretty much improved by getting fired.

You really do basically get incentivized to suck.

The percentage of guaranteed money is absurd. Change my mind on that. It's out of control,

I think a good mark would be paying a coach $1M per win and have that be in the contract. It's crazy that some of these guys are making $8M - $9M a year for being mediocre.
