Memorial Stadium Renovation

Probably means that the South Stadium project will never actually happen.

I do think it's probably the correct call. Updating where they can to make it the most comfortable is the best move to keep people showing up. South Stadium sucks, but at the end of the day, spending an endless amount of money to compete with the home viewing experience is just not going to work.

Hopefully the private donations they sought for the South Stadium project will be put towards NIL efforts.

Wishful thinking ...

North Stadium sucks too .... copy Duke stadium design?

West and east stadiums practically untouched.  Though east upper deck project was a little bit too high IMO.  Maybe tear down upper stratosphere deck.  Save oxygen tanks and hi-powered binoculars  ;)

Troy Dannen was on Sports Nightly last night, did speak about the Osborne Legacy Complex. Not sure if he mentioned anything about stadium discussions/evaluations. Did talk about policy changes in Memorial, cashless etc.

Nebraska no longer paying the fundraising company that was helping raise money for the project.  We were paying them around $200k per month (total of $5.5M).  Not sure how much was actually paid.

Wow. That seems like a lot.  Maybe it’s not.   Any word on what was raised?

The right vision for this project is needed.  I am guessing maybe Trev didn't have it.
My hunch is that Trev had the vision, but maybe lacked a viable path to achieving that vision. One of the reasons mentioned for his departure was the fact that we lacked alignment after the departures of Carter & Green.

Troy Dannen was a guest on the HuskerOnline Headlines show today. Covers quite a bit of ground including the upcoming renovation, NU's new hires, finances from grandfathered seats to alcohol sales, special events at the stadium, standing offer to Bud Crawford to host a fight. Pretty interesting.

Currently, NU’s stadium capacity is around 86,000 to 87,000. Following the 2028 season, after all the stadium renovations, Dannen envisions a stadium capacity of around 80,000 or “slightly below.”

The big thing is that by adding chairbacks, seat size will go from 19 to 21 inches, automatically shrinking capacity.

“We are working towards what will be a post-2026, post-2027, a really thorough renovation of the stadium,” Dannen said on Big Red Wrap-Up. “The South has to come down to tie everything else together. There’s no ‘keep a little bit of it.’ It has to come down. I think we can rebuild half of it and put some temporary (seats) in to really protect our capacity for 2027 before that is finalized in 2028. Then with the East and the West, maybe East chairbacks, and then with the West, anywhere from doing chairbacks to really taking inside the tower down and reconstructing it. There is a lot of deferred maintenance underneath there that if we cover it up, I’m not sure that we will just buy ourselves some more problems down the line.

“Going forward, the stadium has to provide the amenities of the day. We talk about the sellout streak a lot. There are a lot of alternatives for people than to go to Memorial Stadium. We want people to be comfortable when they get there, and the quality of play has to be good; then you’ll have alcohol and (improved) WiFi when the stadium is done — so make it as good of an experience. We will have a scoreboard in there that will hopefully dwarf almost any other scoreboard in the country to make it feel awesome when you are in there.”

Per an email from the Athletic Department:

  • Work continues on a plan to modernize Memorial Stadium that will carry us into the next century built on a sound and sustainable financial model. Our intention is to unveil a design, construction timetable and the financial plans in the first few months of 2025.
  • In October, the Board of Regents approved the sale of alcohol in Memorial Stadium, preceding our pursuit of a concessionaire for the 2025 season. Prior to next fall, we will redesign and modernize our concession areas to support alcohol sales and to expand offerings and service ahead of major renovations to the stadium. Also in 2025, you will see new turf in Memorial Stadium before ultimately, grass takes its place. In December, we will also be replacing turf in the Hawks Championship Center with the identical turf that will be placed in Memorial Stadium.
  • We are also taking a wholistic look at stadium security before next season. While the Evolv entrance screening technology was a good first step, security must follow up-to-date best practices. While the original stadium design never contemplated nearly half of our crowd entering through the west and southwest gates (this will be addressed in the modernization) access has been smooth. Our move to mobile ticketing for the 2025 season will only enhance access for all fans.
  • As you are aware, cashless concessions were put into place this fall, with the average concession transaction time decreasing from 30 seconds to under 10 seconds.
  • A $20 million investment in new cell towers around the stadium will enhance cellular connectivity in 2025, with high-speed Wi-Fi added later as a part of the modernization project.
