Michigan State Game Preview

Until we win 2-3-4 games in row, for several seasons in a row, (we won 3 in a row to start the season) I count on nothing. I don’t look back and I don’t look forward. Just win the next one, which has been hard for us for over a decade. Especially after a big game.
For me, I’m sweating this game. We just lost a big one at home, all eyes were on us on that one.
We lost.
New game, probly should win. Has our bye week been getting healthy, shore up, get nasty after it? Or did we sink into “well, we are who we are..”
A good team says, “crap we were there, let’s go get it.” A mediocre team says, “we played our asses off and weren’t good enough.” Let’s see who we are, I’m not confident until we prove it.

We should beat MI Lite. But will we?
Yes, we should.
4 weeks in, we know this:
Our run defense is not good. It’s actually porous.
Our offense is good until inside the 10.
We are a physical team, we do fly around (thank god)
Our special teams can get it done, finally.
We have talent, but need to keep discipline
(Very few turnovers and penalties overall, thank god). I’ve always said on this site we will live and die by turnovers and penalties, for like 8 yrs, those were my biggest concerns. Seems like we have overcome that.
We have some small gaping holes, but it can be fixed in a bye week, we have to pressure people deep on offense and get pressure on defense.
Which, as always, are our trenches ready to deliver on the OL and DL??

I think our OL can deliver, for once. I don’t think our DL can, conversely.
N wins 31-28 at home. It’s a “who has the ball last” kind of game.
If we only win by 3 in a “who has the ball last” kind of game when Vegas has us favored by 11.5 at home I’ll be very scared for what November has in store for us

If he plays we are in trouble. Fans were correct in saying we need another RB despite the bogus coach speak (or were they trying to bring up the confidence internally in that room?). Either way...the future of that position is bleak.
Fans were absolutely right that we needed another RB. But maybe this past bye week they found someone that can come in and only be our short yardage back inside the 5 at the goal line… while Dowdells vision was crap he had enough force and weight to push through at the goal line. We need someone that can do that.

Vegas had us favored by 8. The line was shifted because of bettors taking the Huskers.

The football games between the Huskers and Sparty have traditional been close games, even when we have had more talent on paper some years. MSU always has big tough interior lineman on both sides (Michigan Lite), good linebackers, a good RB, and a solid Big Ten QB.

I would love to see the Huskers kick a$$ and win convincingly. But I would gladly embrace a 1pt victory if it comes down to that.

I read an article that referenced to a degree @Mavric game comments about having so much money tied to the lower part of our roster. We offered EJ money to keep him last year. Dowdell wanted more to stay and Rhule and Co couldn't pay the "#2" guy more than the "#1" guy. Same thing with CharMar Brown. Brown also allegedly wanted more money than our "#1" and we couldn't pay him that. The perception would look bad that the "#1" was making less than other guys.

Just concerning week 5 after an off season, spring and fall and we still have no RB2. In a league where running is wining. Especially in a game like Sat where wind gusts might be 20-30 mph....Maybe Conner Booth. Didn't he get some props in the fall? One of our heavier RB's....

We’ve never had an accurate pro passer like Dylan, I would love to see him carve up their secondary and make a statement. The wind is a bit of a worry, so I hope they can make the necessary ground adjustments. GBR

Rhule mentioned how weird the Rutgers game was last year (also the first week of October) with the wind and heat, and seems like pretty much the same thing this year. I really hope it doesn't hit 97 like last year, but the projected high of 89 is still ridiculous. For what it's worth, Raiola's struggles in that game last year had nothing to do with the weather IMO, he was just hitting the freshman wall.

Last 6 meetings, Huskers are 2-4 against Mich State.

Loss 17-20 *
Loss 20-23 *
Won 9-6
Won 39-38
Loss 22-27 *
Loss 28-41 *

* means the Huskers were favored to win.

In other words, don't talk down on MSU. Don't puff up your chest before the game is played. Just watch, enjoy and hope for a win. It's still the Big Ten. A league that decides games with linemen, linebackers, special teams, moving the chains offensively, and protecting the ball.

Having said that, I want to see us smash! And put up a 40 or 50 burger on them!
