Nebraska, Tennessee Canceling Games in 2026 & 2027

Makes perfect sense to me for several reasons.

1- We already play 1 more confrrence game than the SEC teams we are competing with for playoff spots.  No reason to play anything other than warm up games in the noncon, except to appease some of our blue haired fan base still living in the 90s.

2- We don't need the increased strength of schedule now that the B1G has expanded.  We are in the undisputed best conference in college football right now.

3- The financial reasons check out.  We are paying to get the best players possible.   Now isn't the time to give up any income.

Could not care less.

Would it be cool to play UT? Yeah, of course. Rocky Top. Classic matchup. Peyton Manning eating an entire salad of Orange Bowl turf. Phillip Fullmer's look of indigestion as Dan Alexander truck-sticks half of his defense in the 4th quarter.

Some of y'all pissin and moanin like Troy Dannon whizzed in your high fiber cereal and then had the audacity to take your mother out to a very nice seafood dinner and not call her back.

Cripes, when was this series first concocted? Feels like it might as well have been the Eisenhower administration. Wasn't Billy C. roaming the sidelines?

Oh NO!!! That series that's been delayed/postponed for years/decades isn't gonna happen! My entire 2020s is RUINED.

Whats wrong...you YELLOW, McRhule??? Bawkawww bawk bawk bawk

In an epoch of husker disappointments and knee buckling gut punches, this is so mind numbingly minor. This is right up there with never getting to see Harrison Beck throw a football over those mountains. Woulda been freakin cool. Didn't happen. That's life.

Nebraska wins. It gets another home game and the moulah that comes with it. It gets what SHOULD* be another W when it's already got a 9 game meat grinder B1G schedule. It gets the old girl (Memorial Stadium) some much needed lovin and improvements.

Tennessee wins. They also ease the schedule AND get a fat check for doing absolutely nothing but kick a can down the road with us for years

If we start winning enough, those big games against big teams are gonna happen, one way or another.

I swear, as I get older time seems to go faster, and yet the off season seems to take longer. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go write an exposè on how Danny Nee was secretly responsible for the rise (and fall) of DaVincis in 1990s Lincoln.

GBR, Goodnight, and Good Luck

* I have learned over the last 20+ years to never assume anything with NU football

I'm not mad just disappointed. It was inevitable I suppose with the gobs of cash involved and zero governorship by the NCAA. This is a sign of a bigger symptom in college football. The game we all knew and loved is dead, and the collegiate sport itself is about to reach it's peak, if it already hasn't. I don't see much growth happening in the next 5 to 10 years because of things just like this, more than likely fan support and viewership will be in decline for all teams.

That article was laughable and obviously written by an SEC Homer.  That said,  he makes some points.   I still think the decision makes sense.
What was laughable about it? It was pretty spot on imo.  Removing your clear husker bias, the vast majority of CFB fans will look at this and come to the same exact conclusion.

I know many a husker fans who are also bummed. Having made the trips out to Oregon and UCLA, Norman to see us play the Sooners a few years ago- these were gameday experiences that were fun memories and stand out from seeing just a random who cares game against the likes of a ball state in Lincoln. I get it, it’s all about $ these days, it’s just a bit disheartening that this decision directly degrades a major part of what made college football special

Tennessee didn't have to put Nebraska in this position. It's a pretty s#!tty thing to do.

We rescheduled for them when they wanted to play the Bristol game. We asked to reschedule and they could have done the same for us. Instead, they took the cash and left Nebraska with a PR nightmare.

Because it doesn't point out the obvious scheduling differences between the SEC and B1G.  You are incorrect regarding the most college football fans statement as well.  Most see it for what it is.  Hop on a few boards outside of SEC fans.  Even a good portion of them get it.

Once auto qualifiers are a thing,  we will see preseason games like this added back.

Meh... most on reddit see it as a chicken s#!t move by Nebraska even if it made sense. Though they don't know that the series was already moved once to accommodate the Vols, and they seem to be lacking southern hospitality these days.

Good answer.

The AD of Tennessee was the AD of UCF when Frost left, correct? He was bitter then and wouldn’t put it past him to negotiate in bad faith now. UT will lose money on this, Nebraska will make money. Oh well

Let's not forget the 1999 bowl win over Tn.  That 99 team was the best Nebraska team that did not win a NC.  I had no doubt they would have if they didn't fumble the ball going across the goal line at texass.  The 99 team handled the TN team fairly easily - winning by 10.

Trip down memory lane:

Ground assault finishes off Vols

With lightning-quick Eric Crouch at the controls of a relentless option attack, the third-ranked Cornhuskers beat Tennessee 31-21 in the Fiesta Bowl on Sunday night.

After the Volunteers (No. 5 ESPN/USA Today, No. 6 AP) rallied from a 17-0 deficit to cut it to 17-14 early in the second half behind the passing of Tee Martin, the Huskers (12-1) finished Tennessee off with second-half touchdown drives of 96 and 99 yards.

“It was an excellent performance,” Nebraska coach Frank Solich said. “There were moments when things got a little rough.”

Cedric Wilson’s 44-yard pass touchdown pass to Donte’ Stallworth, his second TD catch of the game, came on a Tennessee trick play that reduced the lead to 31-21 with 7:25 to play.

But the Vols never got the ball again. Nebraska, which finished the game with 23 consecutive rushing plays for 156 yards, drove downfield and Tennessee (9-3) could do nothing to stop the clock from running out.

It was all too familiar for the Volunteers, who wore down in the second half two years ago in a 42-17 loss to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. The Huskers have won their last 11 bowl matchups against Southeastern Conference teams.
