This is my final opinion on the game last night. After sleeping on it and reading almost everyone's posts and multiple articles, I really think that NE could have won this game WITH the gameplan BC was using. I think it's unfair to say that we were playing to lose. I was critical of the gameplan after the game, but the more I read about this, the more I realize what he was trying to do.

Offensively- We gift-wrapped the ball when Lucky fumbled and that's all there is to it. That drive is probably where we would have seen a lot of quick passing to the tight ends and recievers and a deep ball. But instead we had to wait until after they scored again. Although I don't really agree with the gameplan, who can honestly say with all of their heart that they think that BC wanted to lose that game? That is basically what some people are saying on this board. "We played to lose." Do you people mean we played not to lose? Because I could agree with that. But come on, no one "plays to lose." Give our team, yes I said team, not players, some credit.

Defensively- I don't know if there was anything that we could have done defensively differently. We held them to 28 points, and I think most people thought we would have to score 28 points or more before the game to win. We stopped the run well for most of the game, and were just totally outmatched in the secondary. What else could we have done? Blitz every down? They would have just gotten us with the quick screens to the WR's then...

For those of you calling for BC's head and saying we played to lose, I would love to hear your comments after the Kansas game last year. You can rip into me now, but I truly think we are on the right track. No one is happy with a loss, but let's not jump ship already! It was USC, not Kansas! :restore

I agree with you, Lucky's fumble hurt us big time and our "D" even caused a fumble one time but they ended up picking it up and gaining positive yards. So we actually played well but made critical mistakes that hurt.

There were some opportunities out there. Some big plays could have been made. That fumble was tough. Good to count on Herian. Man it was good to see him make a play.

I expected a different game plan, yea. But what killed that game for us was tunovers and penalties.

We'd either a) turn the ball over at a crucial time or b) have a great play and have it be called back.

You can't do that against a team like SC. You will get beat and NU did.

Apparently Callahan thought that we couldn't get into a track meet with SC thus he tried to slow the game down. It worked, before NU started turning the ball over and making dumb mistakes. At that point, I really expected Callahan and Norvell to really start to throw the ball around but they didn't. I was dissapointed in that. You gotta put the pedal to the metal sometime.

I posted this elsewhere, but I think his game plan was very very close to being what we needed. he just didn't pick his spots to go down field. that is what TO was so good at. knowing when to go down field, or even pull a trick play. to me thats a coach thats still young, and learning. I personally don't think we could have gone blow for blow with them in the passing game. thats what USC it built to do, and they get plenty of practice doing that in the pac-10

I think the play that really ended up hurting us was the holding call in the second q. We were inside the 50, and moving the ball great. Then the holding call punched us in the gut, we had to punt, and USC drove and went up 14-3. Imagine if we would have scored, and gone up 10-7. We would have been much more fired up, and I think the passing would have been set up. Same with the first drive of the second half. We had a great 3 and out, with almost two picks, and then fumbled on the first play. That hurt us big time.

Great post Dave I agree with you 100% :thumbs
At the same time, "putting the pedal to the metal" could result in a 50 point loss if turnovers start to mount.

I guess when it comes down to it, I just wish we would have won!

WTH is going on.... this is the first time i have been on here since the game, it's like the sky fell and demolished the husker nation or something? Yeah, hindsight is 20/20 and things could have been done differently, i was begging for a pass through that first half, but i am afraid ZT would have been decapitated if he did any more than they actually let him, 28-10 vs. pry the #2 team in the nation isn't bad. And all this "coaching not to lose" BS is just that.. BS. So he didn't heave it down the field vs the "vulnerable" secondary, Callahan couldn't get the plan to work, that happens.... it's college football. I wanted to win as much as the next guy but cmon, show some freakin support

I hear ya Alex. There were just so many opportunities in that game, regardless of game plan, that could have changed the game.

Some people wanted more passing, I hope they were going to be prepared for more INT's. USC was dropping 8 players into coverage a lot of the time.

It's not magic. It's not like the passing game was wide open and it just got ingnored. Which really is what some people would apparently have you believe.

I agree with Dave and Alex this isn't the end of the world!!! Sure a few things could have been done differently, but none of us are psychic and know what would have happened!!!! The true fans will rise from this game............move on...........and get pumped about the Troy game!!!!! :cheers
