I knew a guy who snapped for IL years and years ago and got a tryout for the Bears and was on their practice squad for min. He was shorter than me (6'1") but he was probably 240 ish. He really only did snapping for FG and Extra points. I don't think he was athletic enough to run down field and cover on punts. Probably why he didn't make it.
I've done it as well in HS. I was actually the emergency back up in college if the other two got hurt, because I showed them I could do it. But I was only about 190lbs at the time and I played DB and never practiced long snapping. Also as a former QB I think know release points comes naturally. When I coached HS I taught our back up qbs to do it and they usually caught on pretty quick. I am aware that in college and pros you basically have to snap at a certain speed to have your kick not blocked. I know there are Pros who know how many revolutions the ball is making and how to adjust if the holder wants the laces a certain way (at least they said they could). Those guys are probably few and far between.
Rhule has said that this is part of their training now. Let's not forget we had a Pro last year with Ortiz, and he probably was capable of doing this.
I think think these guys just need to focus on hitting their target every time. The holder should be able to adjust the laces as he's putting it down. I would rather be able to just put my hand out and know thats where the ball is coming and worry about the lace, than having to pick the ball off the turf and try to make the hold.
