Our special teams sucks

Did we have 11 guys on the field on the two punt blocks?

If we did, why did we go to a different formation than we've been using all year?

No idea why we changed our punt formation.  We took one of the three shield guys off and added one to the right side of the line.

So we have two fewer blockers on our left side - two on the left vs three on the right and one fewer in the shield.  Rutgers saw it here and took advantage on the next two.

Right here.  We are just begging them to load up our left side because we overloaded the right.  They do and we pay.

This is actually more on the punter.  In HS, snap to punt is 2.1 but in college it should be quicker.  Buschemi is a little slow to punt here, but he has normally been slow to punt throughout his time at Nebraska.  Slow in motion and slow in leg thrust.

I know he received flowers for his toughness to play through pain, and for his nice pass on the fake punt.  And the dagger punt towards the end of the game (really really good to see).

But this is not a good punt at all.  The result turned out terrific.  But he only punts is 43 yards in the air, and the hang-time is just under 4.0 seconds - which is atrocious for college.  Low hang-time is the main reason why teams return punts with room in front of them to catch and run.

As you see the punt land at the 43, the nearest Husker defenders are 11 yards away.  If the punt returner fields it and starts to run, he has enough time to make a defender miss and pick up 10-15-20 yards.  The low hang time also is a big reason for low NET punting.

Just sharing.

He could also barely walk off the field after it because he got clobbered on the first punt.

This shouldn’t be surprising to anyone, but we are last place (133rd) in blocked kicks allowed with 5. Only 1 team has 4. Every other team in the country has 3 or fewer.

We are:

109th in PR defense.

94th in KR defense.

131st in net punting.

73rd in KR.

96th in PR.

I think what irritates me the most is the glaringly obvious stuff - like our gunners getting to a spot on the field, with a bit of time still (our punter did not outkick the coverage), and the ball lands between them and the end zone while they are standing in a place that doesn’t allow them to stop it from going there. That happened twice against Purdue. We can’t do any of the basic stuff. We have one guy doing heroics in spite of the coaching.

Out ST coach should have been fired after the Purdue game. Honestly he would make more $ that way.

We will have a KO returned for a TD against us this season. Maybe 2.
At the CU game earlier this year I commented to my dad, before he stated the obvious that I was going to say…

“we have gapping holes in our return unit and if they get one more block or missed tackle, it’s to the house.”

normally teams don’t want their starters on special teams, but if the guys wanting to prove themselves can’t get it done, put the main guys out there.  It’s a big issue.

i sincerely hope, all in, that during the bye week we find players and get the scheme right (coaching), that will fix these gigantic and glaring issues on special teams.

missing FGs is one thing. Two blocked punts, giving up the 40yd line and shifting momentum on special teams is an entirely different subject.  It’s been bad on several fronts.  BAD
